I clicked "add phone number" on manage how to sign in with microsoft. I then added my phone number and recieved no text. I resent the code and yet recieved no text. I restarted my phone, reset the wifi and looked at other articles with people having this problem. Nothing helped. Please don't send me the microsoft help page on this issue because that hasn't fixed the problem.

    Hi everyone,

I wanted to share the work around my husband figured out since he was experiencing a similar issue of requesting a code, receiving it and inputting it, only to get denied with the error "There is a temporary problem with the service. Please try again. If you continue to get this message, try again later." We tried the other suggestions from reddit and other forums and finally he called support. He was hung up on/lost connection a couple of times he finally got to someone who attempted to help but, sadly was no help at all and refused to accept that my husband was not trying to add his phone number to the authenticator. My husband already had his phone number in the authenticator. My husband had to explain to online chat support twice that it was not the issue and had to re-explain what the problem was and what he was trying to do. Eventually support said the only thing he could think to do was escalate the issue to account recovery. My husband said no, that's not the issue, I have access. I'll figure it out myself.

Here's the work around he figured out. - It's a glitch (at least for him) between the application and the fact that he was password-less through the authenticator. (Which he suggested was an issue to support, and they shot it down) He went into his account and turned off password-less. He then went through his phone's data service (not wi-fi) and went into his account to add the phone number/alias. He followed the steps and TADA his phone number was added. He stayed on the data of his phone, and he was finally able to redeem his Microsoft/Bing rewards. This problem took months to get resolved and less than 10 minutes to fix and get the points redeemed.

Here was the clue all along...

Under the frequently asked questions section of How to go passwordless...

'Does a passwordless account work with all apps and services?

No. Some older versions of Windows, apps, and services still need a password. Please continue to use a password if you use any of the following:

    1. Xbox 360
    2. Office 2010 or earlier
    3. Office for Mac 2011 or earlier
    4. Products and services which use IMAP and POP email services
    5. Windows 8.1, Windows 7 or earlier
    6. Some Windows features including Remote Desktop and Credential Manager
    7. Some command line and task scheduler services.'

Hopefully, this helps others solve this long ongoing issue. All it took was my husband's persistence and previous Xbox Ambassador experience (back in 2012 when Microsoft had its own interface help chat "Chat with an ambassador" which they don't have anymore.)
