Word on Android bug with physical keyboard.

There is a bug with Word for Android (Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra with OneUI7) and physical keyboards. It's interpreting spacebar badly - sometimes it doesn't type space, sometimes it pastes corrected words. Autocorrect is turned off.

I tried different physical keyboards, and both standard android and dex mode.

Samsung phones use Samsung keyboard for physical keyboard. So, it is some kind of incompatibility between the two. Autocorrect in Samsung keyboard settings are turned off.

I've found the solution that worked for me, hopefully it helps you, too. Settings → General management → Samsung Keyboard → Languages and Types → Set "Language switching method" to "Language key" (not "Language key + spacebar")

Turning off predictive text has been suggested as a workaround in other threads, for example at https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/my-portable-keyboard-requires-two-taps-of-the/72eecd3a-bee9-4319-8080-5942c1be031f .

    Hi @Basil

Thank you for reaching out. We understand you're experiencing an issue with the spacebar when using a physical keyboard in Microsoft Word for Android on your Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (One UI 7). We're sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.

The problem you describe, where the spacebar either doesn't register or pastes "corrected" words despite autocorrect being off, often points to a compatibility issue between the Word application and how your Samsung device handles physical keyboard input via Samsung Keyboard.

Here are a few steps you can try to improve the situation:

Clear Samsung Keyboard Cache and Data:

    • Go to Settings > Apps > Samsung Keyboard > Storage > Clear Cache and Clear Data
    • Restart your tablet and try typing in Word Online again.

Uninstall & Reinstall: Remove the affected apps, restart your phone, and reinstall them from the Play Store.

Try a different browser: Open Word Online in a different web browser and see if the problem persists.

Test a different keyboard app: Download a free keyboard app from the Play Store, set it as your default keyboard, and try typing in Word Online again.

This issue likely involves both Microsoft Word and Samsung’s keyboard system (One UI), so pinpointing the exact cause can be difficult. We recommend reporting this problem to both Microsoft and Samsung, as more user feedback helps prioritize a fix.

In the meantime, please continue with the troubleshooting steps we previously provided. These steps can often resolve or temporarily alleviate such issues.

We appreciate your understanding as we work to find a permanent solution.
