When I first got my surface book I could detach it without any issues, however I am no longer able to. Now when trying to detach it the detach button's light blinks green but nothing happens. When I hover over the software detach option it says "Surface Detach: Detached" and when looking at the battery status it say "Battery 1 not available." Everything appears to indicate it does not think it is currently attached to the keyboard, when in fact it is. I did confirm the battery is fully charged. Also, I just did a factory reset, again no change in this. With me doing a reset I'm assuming it's some sort of hardware issue. Any thoughts on this? Is there some sort of service or app I could reset? RESOLVED: I got this issue resolved. Essentially you need to enter the Surface Book Bios, then exit. Here are the steps I took to resolve the issue: Shutdown the Surface Book. Hold down the power button just long enough to turn it back on. Hold the volume UP button until you enter the bios (this is the left side of the volume control, if you are facing the screen. This is also the side of the volume control closest to the power button). You do NOT need to make any changes in the bios. Exit the bios, you will be prompted that changes will be saved. The computer should restart. After doing this the behavior for my button completely changed and it gave some errors about needing elevated permissions which wouldn't go away, but I was able to restart it again and before I logged in I was able to detach it completely from the device without any issues. Normal operations have now been restored and I am able to detach and re-attach it like normal. EDIT: Something I forgot to include, which olykwik pointed out in another response, is that you may need to reset windows prior to performing this fix. I say "may need to" because I did not test this prior to resetting windows, so I don't know if resetting windows is required or not, but I did reset windows before I did these steps. I would suggest first attempting this BEFORE resetting windows (as this will cause you to lose all files/applications, depending on your selection), but if it still does not work you might need to reset windows, then follow these steps. [Edit} This issue is NOT RESOLVED as of 28 October 2015. The batteries have both gone dead now and if I don't receive any resolution, all I know to do is to return the product for credit. When I opened my Surface Book today I noticed the red LED was illuminated on the Detach button. Then quickly realized the keyboard does not respond and I cannot detach the keyboard. And the battery is not charging. The white LED on the charger is on, as if everything is ok. The red LED on the Detach button remains on constantly, even when the computer is off and the charger is not connected. Battery #2 is discharging much faster than expected, leading me to believe some component in the attach/detach mechanism is engaged and consuming power. I know the keyboard will not detach if the power drops below 10%. I'm concerned that the battery will continue to drain and I'll be stuck with a very expensive paperweight. The Detach icon in the task bar indicates "Ready to Detach." The tablet is firmly attached and appears normal, i.e. not mounted at an angle, partially, etc. I've taken the following steps without any change: * Rotated the power connection 180 degrees. * Rebooted using the Reboot function in the UI. * Rebooted to BIOS using the two-button method (Power, then enter BIOS with Volume-Up button, exit with no changes) * Manually verified there are no updates available. * Power off fully, disconnect charger, wait ten minutes, boot. * Tried powering from standard power supply that came with the Surface Book, and with the Surface Dock for Surface Book. * Checked Device Manager for banged items and found none. * Checked running tasks and found nothing unusual. * Checked event logs - found no hardware events at all, and no relevant errors or warnings. Is there a way to manually detach the keyboard? (I've got to believe there IS a way.) If I could detach the keyboard, I could at least continue to use the tablet while a solution is found. Any advice is appreciated.

Are you kidding me? It's a new product. I'm a developer and can't stand people that sit on their high horse and whine about things not being PERFECT on version 1.0 of anything, no matter how simple it may seem to an average user. Nothing in life is perfect. If you wanted perfection, look in the mirror and gaze at a perfectly imperfect person. If you had $1900 to spare for a new device, I'm sure you've got to be smart enough to understand the concept of "nothing is perfect". I don't mean to be offensive but come on, stop the whining, man up, and be patient. Sorry, I don't know what you expect out of your hardware. But I have NEVER experience such lack of software and hardware quality from Apple. That is the quality standard that I have come to expect from anything I buy. Even my PC workstation that I built from random **** parts is more stable than my SB from Microsoft.

Have you tried installing all the available updates and restarting the Surface Book?

FIXED

Solution:

So, instead of just going into the BIOS but pressing the power button, releasing, then holding the volume UP button. When the device is powered down, I held the power + the volume up button at the same time. After a few seconds, the keyboard detach light blinked a bit, then the device quickly powered on then off. Then, after I powered on, I was able to get normal function. YAY!!

Sorry, I don't know what you expect out of your hardware. But I have NEVER experience such lack of software and hardware quality from Apple.
