When I first got my surface book I could detach it without any issues, however I am no longer able to. Now when trying to detach it the detach button's light blinks green but nothing happens. When I hover over the software detach option it says "Surface Detach: Detached" and when looking at the battery status it say "Battery 1 not available." Everything appears to indicate it does not think it is currently attached to the keyboard, when in fact it is. I did confirm the battery is fully charged. Also, I just did a factory reset, again no change in this. With me doing a reset I'm assuming it's some sort of hardware issue. Any thoughts on this? Is there some sort of service or app I could reset? RESOLVED: I got this issue resolved. Essentially you need to enter the Surface Book Bios, then exit. Here are the steps I took to resolve the issue: Shutdown the Surface Book. Hold down the power button just long enough to turn it back on. Hold the volume UP button until you enter the bios (this is the left side of the volume control, if you are facing the screen. This is also the side of the volume control closest to the power button). You do NOT need to make any changes in the bios. Exit the bios, you will be prompted that changes will be saved. The computer should restart. After doing this the behavior for my button completely changed and it gave some errors about needing elevated permissions which wouldn't go away, but I was able to restart it again and before I logged in I was able to detach it completely from the device without any issues. Normal operations have now been restored and I am able to detach and re-attach it like normal. EDIT: Something I forgot to include, which olykwik pointed out in another response, is that you may need to reset windows prior to performing this fix. I say "may need to" because I did not test this prior to resetting windows, so I don't know if resetting windows is required or not, but I did reset windows before I did these steps. I would suggest first attempting this BEFORE resetting windows (as this will cause you to lose all files/applications, depending on your selection), but if it still does not work you might need to reset windows, then follow these steps. Purchased my SB I7 at the end of October had freezing issues and sleep issues from the beginning but held out for the corrective firmware which helped the freezing but the sleep thing persisted so I just don't let it sleep. Anyway, SB had been working really well until Dec 25. I had been using it in separated tablet mode more and got interrupted in the middle of an update. After that, I completed the update and found that the detach light stayed solid red and it wouldn't boot despite 40 a temps plus ++with the 2 button shutdown. I also, had noticed that the charger LED light wasn't always coming on as it had and needed to be fiddled with to make it illuminate- but it would- I tried charger in both directions. Still nothing. Red light still on. I decided to take it off charge and continued to do the two button shut down when it moved me -All the time!. Nothing. After a day or so not charging the light went off and I was able to boot but it didn't recognize the keyboard or track pad and it wouldn't recognize battery 1 so it would't detach. But, I was able to complete my updates , save some files and rebooted then RED Light came again! Waited a day or so unplugged and the red light went off, I rebooted still with no keyboard. Checked updates and they were installed. Contacted support and let them wander around my computer- tech updated my battery drivers had me do a scan (SFC?) then when it rebooted nothing but red light. Contacted MS support again and and they are sending me a replacement. In the meantime I let the SB rest another day or so and got it going-key board and everything seems to be working fine including the charging light! Had a couple BSD Internal Power Errors right off the bat but everything seems fine now.... For how long who knows. I'm hesitant about swapping my SB out for a rebuilt one at this point. Thought if someone else was having this SOLID RED LIGHT they should know leaving it unplugged for a couple days to get the light to go off might enable them to start the machine and get their files off and or get a MS support person on their book What a ride. The computer was on and I was logged in. (Windows was NOT reset.) I closed all my open programs I pressed and held the POWER and Volume up button for a full 30 seconds. (during this time the computer first showed the blue screen that usually appears when you press ctrl - alt - del. That was visible for about 5 seconds. Then the screen went black as the computer turned off. Then it turned back on and showed the Surface logo for about 3 seconds. Then it turned off again. That was the end of the 30 seconds so I released the buttons.) I pressed and held the volume up button and quickly pressed the power button. The computer booted into BIOS. I Exited the BIOS the computer restarted and loaded Windows. Windows hello attempted to log me in but I covered the camera with my hand. I then Tested the Detach button and it was working. It has been working correctly ever since. Not sure why it didn't work the first time but I am glad it works now. Thank You.

Volume up refers to the volume button next to the power button on the clipboard (tablet part of the surface).

FIXED

Solution:

So, instead of just going into the BIOS but pressing the power button, releasing, then holding the volume UP button. When the device is powered down, I held the power + the volume up button at the same time. After a few seconds, the keyboard detach light blinked a bit, then the device quickly powered on then off. Then, after I powered on, I was able to get normal function. YAY!!
