Unable to Detach Clipboard from Keyboard

When I first got my surface book I could detach it without any issues, however I am no longer able to.

Now when trying to detach it the detach button's light blinks green but nothing happens. When I hover over the software detach option it says "Surface Detach: Detached" and when looking at the battery status it say "Battery 1 not available." Everything appears to indicate it does not think it is currently attached to the keyboard, when in fact it is.

I did confirm the battery is fully charged. Also, I just did a factory reset, again no change in this. With me doing a reset I'm assuming it's some sort of hardware issue.

Any thoughts on this? Is there some sort of service or app I could reset?

RESOLVED:

I got this issue resolved. To give credit where credit is due I referenced information from the following two pages:

I believe many people previously suggested doing a two button shutdown, but maybe I was doing something incorrectly. Essentially you need to enter the Surface Book Bios, then exit.

Here are the steps I took to resolve the issue:

  • Shutdown the Surface Book.
  • Hold down the power button just long enough to turn it back on.
  • Hold the volume UP button until you enter the bios (this is the left side of the volume control, if you are facing the screen. This is also the side of the volume control closest to the power button).
  • You do NOT need to make any changes in the bios.
  • Exit the bios, you will be prompted that changes will be saved.
  • The computer should restart.

After doing this the behavior for my button completely changed and it gave some errors about needing elevated permissions which wouldn't go away, but I was able to restart it again and before I logged in I was able to detach it completely from the device without any issues.

Normal operations have now been restored and I am able to detach and re-attach it like normal.

EDIT: Something I forgot to include, which olykwik pointed out in another response, is that you may need to reset windows prior to performing this fix. I say "may need to" because I did not test this prior to resetting windows, so I don't know if resetting windows is required or not, but I did reset windows before I did these steps.

I would suggest first attempting this BEFORE resetting windows (as this will cause you to lose all files/applications, depending on your selection), but if it still does not work you might need to reset windows, then follow these steps.

If this resolved your issue, please mark its as the answer/helpful so others can find it more easily.

FIXED

Solution:

So, instead of just going into the BIOS but pressing the power button, releasing, then holding the volume UP button. When the device is powered down, I held the power + the volume up button at the same time. After a few seconds, the keyboard detach light blinked a bit, then the device quickly powered on then off. Then, after I powered on, I was able to get normal function. YAY!!

hi John   I would either return your Book for replacement before the return window at the retail store runs out or call Surface, Support and open a case   if Support cant fix that error then insist ehy send you a replacement like they did for me for both of my defective Surface books   besy buy website alows pre order of most models and says they will be back in stock on mist stores by November 17   I was also told that in some instances when the computers are made that they FLASH insrall the operating systemvinto each one and that sometimes there is no way to repair the ones that have facrory installed errors and those have to go back for repacement

Hi I is a mechanical and software issue   MS tech support replaced it this morning by finding me one tucked away at a local MS store   this one is working great not error free however  the latch works perfectly though I noticed it does not unlatch when you are on any SETTINGS page   I also got this error in the photo tech Support told me this is not a huge issue but will be fixed in an update   with the Graphics crashing and recovering Tech support ran extesnive Tools diagnstics on two of my S Books that have since been sent back to theor team as defective but when they ran the elaborate Intel test and NVIDIA test even the,se two defective Books came back as working perfectly as far as those two all important chips are concerned   so the conclusion is that except: for the me,chanical failure of the latching system in the tablet, all these other issues are software related and or there are conflicts with apps conflictibg with the system

Hello John and all MS Community Members, I can confirm that after complete reset from the MS Cloud (not from USB recovery image of Windows 10), that all updates installed correctly.   you no loner have to use a USB drive to re load W10   I did it with MS tech support on phone directly from the MS Cloud by holding the power button down and the volume rocker volume UP at the same time till I saw the Surface ogo and then let go of power button and volume rockeer up button simultaneously (which the level UP side of the rocker is the left side of the rocker). that takes you to the BLUE BIOS screen. i then went direct to EXIT without making any changes toany part of that page it took me to RESTART on the next page.   you skip the bitlocker request and move to the next page and follow reset.   but after all of this it did NOT correct the error in the red box saying Failed to detatch

in the end these errors could not be fixed and MS set up an immediate exchange of this defective 512 SB for one that was never picked up as a pre order in one of my local MS Stores   that 512 had so many other issues that I spent 6 hours the past week on with tech support in Redmond, WA    my unit was called a 'hot case' becazuse the unlatching issues, cursor freezing all the time, crashing of the Intel processor and the Pen upon double click.. while correctly taking a screen shot also then IN ERROR brings up One Note when it is not supposed to.

in fact, there were so many of these errors on my 256 7 Book that today I received a brand new sealed replacement w one day shipping from MS in an Advanced Exchange  for this past week tech support and I have worked with bith defective units comparing and analyzing issues from Book to Book     both are defective seriously   software issues and hardward of the screen latching system on the 512   and today BOTH were replaced    monday I have another tech call w Richard to analyze the two replacements

So I strongly suggest that you, John and anyone with serious issues call Surface Support call early in the day Pacific time when you are more likely to get a tech person either on the MS redmond campus or in their Portand OR campus   the US MS tech people know much MORE than the international tech people by far   I hope this helps!!!
