April 19 Surface Book Update failure - Error 0x800f0203

While applying today's updates, I received a Blue screen. After it restarted, it applied updates before continuing into Windows startup.

Went into Windows Update and clicked on Install for the remaining ones that were yet to be applied. Then I get this error:

* Intel Corporation driver update for Intel(R) Control Logic - Error - 0x800f0203

I clicked Retry, it says no updates available.

Click check for updates and again:

* Intel Corporation driver update for Intel(R) Control Logic - Error - 0x800f0203

Rebooted, still offering this driver and failing with same error.

this workaround was posted on reddit (and fixed the issue for me!):

  • Open the setupapi.dev.log log file from c:\windows\inf.
  • Find the error "Failed to install device instance".
  • Above this error it will say which inf file caused the issue. In my case oem90.inf
  • Run "pnputil -d oem90.inf" from an elevated command prompt
  • Re-run windows update and install

    When I try the pnputil command I get told "Deleting the driver package failed :One or more devices are presently installed using the specified INF."

    Any thoughts on this?

    So I have a similar but not quite identical issue to everybody else so far.

    When applying the updates, everything went as expected, but some updates failed to install. I didn't BSoD or hard reset the machine at any point. The error code was also 0x800f0203, but looking at my setupapi.dev.log, I could not find any error message. I manually uninstalled the drivers for the elements that failed to install and forced the updates to run again, which did run the updates again and successfully installed them.

    However, looking at the devices afterwards, I'm still on the old (2015) drivers. I've tried numerous different ways to fix it including pnputil on the INF files related to each device to no avail. The updates run but don't seem to actually download a new driver. Looking at the available drivers for each device, I only see the one I currently have installed.

    The devices that failed to update are the Control Logic, Front/Rear cameras and the Imaging Signal Processor 2500.

    There are many posts about problems with the most recent update. It also did not work for me and I had to restore to pre-update. I saw one post that stated that the MS Engineers have corrected the problem going forward and are working on a fix for those who did install the update and were still experiencing issues. Can anyone verify this? I do not see the April update on the MS download site (manual download/install) as the 02/22/16 update is still there. And I don't want to run the Windows Updater and auto install the problematic version (if it has not been corrected). Has Microsoft truly corrected or pulled the update? Thanks.
