April 19 Surface Book Update failure - Error 0x800f0203

While applying today's updates, I received a Blue screen. After it restarted, it applied updates before continuing into Windows startup.

Went into Windows Update and clicked on Install for the remaining ones that were yet to be applied. Then I get this error:

* Intel Corporation driver update for Intel(R) Control Logic - Error - 0x800f0203

I clicked Retry, it says no updates available.

Click check for updates and again:

* Intel Corporation driver update for Intel(R) Control Logic - Error - 0x800f0203

Rebooted, still offering this driver and failing with same error.

this workaround was posted on reddit (and fixed the issue for me!):

  • Open the setupapi.dev.log log file from c:\windows\inf.
  • Find the error "Failed to install device instance".
  • Above this error it will say which inf file caused the issue. In my case oem90.inf
  • Run "pnputil -d oem90.inf" from an elevated command prompt
  • Re-run windows update and install

    This seems to be for only one specific error. It doesn't solve the failure of the Intel HD 520 driver.

    On my work SP4 (i7) I am not a local admin on the computer.  So during the firmware\update I received the BSOD after it restarted I went back into the Windows Updates and tried to apply the updates it prompted for elevated permissions (admin account) to install them.  I could not work around this.  So then I found this forum and implemented bbernd's workaround.  However the file that I was getting an error on was oem125.inf instead of the oem90.inf everyone else is reporting.

    On my personal SP4 (m3) I am local admin and I had not issues installing updates. 

    Nice and consistent...
