April 19 Surface Book Update failure - Error 0x800f0203

While applying today's updates, I received a Blue screen. After it restarted, it applied updates before continuing into Windows startup.

Went into Windows Update and clicked on Install for the remaining ones that were yet to be applied. Then I get this error:

* Intel Corporation driver update for Intel(R) Control Logic - Error - 0x800f0203

I clicked Retry, it says no updates available.

Click check for updates and again:

* Intel Corporation driver update for Intel(R) Control Logic - Error - 0x800f0203

Rebooted, still offering this driver and failing with same error.

this workaround was posted on reddit (and fixed the issue for me!):

  • Open the setupapi.dev.log log file from c:\windows\inf.
  • Find the error "Failed to install device instance".
  • Above this error it will say which inf file caused the issue. In my case oem90.inf
  • Run "pnputil -d oem90.inf" from an elevated command prompt
  • Re-run windows update and install

That article doesn't seem relevant.  It was working OK until it tried to install today's April 19th patches.

It is 25% of the way into a factory recovery.  I'll try again when that's done.

This didn't work for me.  Today (literally 2 hours ago) I recieved an i7/16GB Pro 4.  Booted it up and it started into downloading updates.  Every single one of the driver/firmware updates reported failed after the reboot.  None of them have the "Failed to install device instance".  Instead they all have "Error 5: Access is denied".

Now the camera doesn't work.  I've rebooted, tried a system restore.  Nothing works.  Windows updates says I'm up to date.

There's also no option to restore to factory settings so I'm downloading a recovery image.

Man this is not a good first impression with this device.

Did you tried to apply the latest firmware update following the steps from the link bellow?

I just did another retry on the patch install and it worked. My devices look fine, in my case MS has fixed the problem.
