April 19 Surface Book Update failure - Error 0x800f0203

While applying today's updates, I received a Blue screen. After it restarted, it applied updates before continuing into Windows startup.

Went into Windows Update and clicked on Install for the remaining ones that were yet to be applied. Then I get this error:

* Intel Corporation driver update for Intel(R) Control Logic - Error - 0x800f0203

I clicked Retry, it says no updates available.

Click check for updates and again:

* Intel Corporation driver update for Intel(R) Control Logic - Error - 0x800f0203

Rebooted, still offering this driver and failing with same error.

this workaround was posted on reddit (and fixed the issue for me!):

  • Open the setupapi.dev.log log file from c:\windows\inf.
  • Find the error "Failed to install device instance".
  • Above this error it will say which inf file caused the issue. In my case oem90.inf
  • Run "pnputil -d oem90.inf" from an elevated command prompt
  • Re-run windows update and install

Not suggesting anyone do this, but I used the Reset this PC option to do a full wipe of the system. Once installation completed, I ran Windows Update and most of the drivers installed and the system updates completed successfully.

All I see now are the following errors:

After checking in the Device Manager for devices showing issues and selecting to update drivers (which failed) I now have 3 drivers showing with issues.

Intel Corporation driver update for Intel(R) Control Logic - Error 0x800f0203

Intel Corporation driver update for Intel(R) CSI2 Host Controller - Error 0x800f0203

Microsoft driver update for Surface Dock Firmware Update - Error 0x800f0203

It seems that Error 0x800f0203 means

"There is no driver selected for the device information set or element."

Still no closer to getting updates installed.

On the plus side, Device Manager is not showing any errors now. So everything is working, but with older drivers.

    David

PS: Don't Uninstall the Intel(R) CSI2 Host Controller driver as this will break Windows Hello as it will not be able to access the cameras.
