Surface Detach Icon says Detached when it's not

After installing system updates on 02/17/16 for Windows 10, the Surface Detach icon in the taskbar is grayed out and when I mouse over it, it says "Surface Detach: Detached" when it's actually attached and connected to the keyboard. Keyboard works fine but when I try to detach, I have to hold the keyboard detach button for over 10 seconds before the light turns green and I hear the detach sound. 

Also, since this started happening, after detaching, the screen no longer rotates in Tablet Mode. Tried locking and unlocking Autorotation and nothing will rotate the screen anymore.

Not sure if these two problems are related.

    Solved the problem. For anyone else with the same issues, resolving this problem solved both issues of not recognizing detachment and auto-rotate error.

    I downloaded the SurfaceBook_Win10_160400_2.msi file from

    Ran the file and restarted as prompted. Problem(s) appear to be fixed.

    Fixed it. At least for now.

    Go to Task Manager >> Surface DTX. End the task. Then go to startup. Disable. Then enable.

    Restart your comp.

    When I did that, I now get the correct status (Surface Detach: Ready to Detach).

    tried this two times 

    only work for a day then back to the same problem and also screen going on suggested screen brightness when on brighter

    This procedure temporarily solved my SB problems, but they have returned. Camera not turning on, software detach icon not working, hardware detach taking much longer than normal, no green attach and detach messages, running programs gone.

    It seems to involve hibernation. Everything was fine all day yesterday after fixing the file corruption. Went to sleep several times during the day and came out with no problems. The one thing I wanted to test was hibernation, so last night, I used the Start menu to go directly to hibernation. When I turned it on this morning, running programs were gone and all the other problems were back. I ran sfc /scannow and everything was clean. Reboot fixes the camera and detach buttons. I'm going to completely turn off hibernation and see what happens.

    Hello all

    We have noticed that in certain instances the 1/27/2016 update did not install completely and is now is causing the 2/17/2016 update to fail for some customers. To check that the 2/17/2016 update is completely installed and fix it if needed, follow these steps:

    Check for Installation Success

    1.  Enter the words Device Manager into the search box on the taskbar, then select Device Manager from the list of results.

    2.  Expand the Firmware section.

    3.  If the items listed here do not have exclamation marks, the 2/17/2016 update is properly installed.

    4.  If the items listed here do have exclamation marks, manually reinstall the 2/17/2016 update following the steps below.

    Manually Install the 2/17 Update

    1.  Download the MSI package for Surface Book or Surface Pro 4.

    2.  In Device Manager, double-click the item under Firmware that has an exclamation mark, select the Driver tab, and then select Uninstall. Do this for all items under Firmware that have an exclamation mark.

    3.  Open and run the MSI setup package that you downloaded.

    4.  Restart your Surface (do not shutdown).

    Well, the update took, but I still have a grayed out 'Detach' icon.  What do I do now?

    I could not get any suggestion in this thread to work.  Nothing on MS web has any good suggestions either.  I'm not sure what their doing in Redmond, but solving this and other problems seem to be off their radar.  It is disgusting to support Microsoft for 2+ decades without any work on real solutions.

    I finally used 'Advanced Recovery' in Update & Security.  It has been lees than one day, but seems several problems went away.  I'll give an update in 24 to 48 hours either way.
