After installing system updates on 02/17/16 for Windows 10, the Surface Detach icon in the taskbar is grayed out and when I mouse over it, it says "Surface Detach: Detached" when it's actually attached and connected to the keyboard. Keyboard works fine but when I try to detach, I have to hold the keyboard detach button for over 10 seconds before the light turns green and I hear the detach sound.
Also, since this started happening, after detaching, the screen no longer rotates in Tablet Mode. Tried locking and unlocking Autorotation and nothing will rotate the screen anymore.
Not sure if these two problems are related.

FYI, your problems can likely be resolved by disabling fast startup. We are still waiting on an update from MS.

I have noticed this in the last few days as well.
Yesterday I went into the BIOS and exited immediately. This fixed it yesterday. However, this morning it happened again.
Today I went into task manager and ended the "SurfaceDTX" task. Went into startup items and disabled SurfaceDTX... I immediately re-enabled it as a startup item, restarted the Surface Book, and everything was after restart. I did a second restart to verify it was still OK.
We will see what happens tomorrow, but as of right now it seems OK. Hopefully an official fix calls soon.
My SB (i7, 512, nVidia GPU), which has now been in my possession for about 6 weeks, has developed some new behaviors since the 2/17 updates (which installed smoothly, by the way). The computer now seems to think that the clipboard is permanently detached even though its not and is working perfectly normally in concert with the keyboard.
The first odd thing was that whenever I was running Mozilla Thunderbird, I would see the Action Required message with the Surface Detach icon. With Thunderbird closed, the computer was ready to detach. It would seem strange that a program as simple as this would need the nVidia GPU and hence generate this message. This behavior was not evident before the recent updates.
Yesterday I did a detach and reattach without incident. This morning the icon bore the message Surface Detach: Detached. However after holding down the Detach key, the clipboard did detach anyway. But when I tried to reattached it, it didn't come together with the usual magnetic "snap". Instead, after pushing the parts together there seemed to be a tight fit but the Surface Detach: Detached message remained (and remains) even though the clipboard is seemingly attached and both components of the computer working normally together.
This is now a persistent thing and holding down the Detach key doesn't do anything. The clipboard seems as firmly attached as ever and I can't pull it apart from the keyboard using a fair amount of force.

After the recent update on my Surface Book, my SB after a cold boot tells me in Surface Detach notification that my SB is detached. Even though the SB is attached to the keyboard it still says this.
I can still detach the SB using the detach button but the SB will not re-orient the screen if I have it upside-down. The Rotation lock is not on. Toggling the Rotation lock several times does not fix the problem.
The only solution is to reboot the SB and everything then works fine like it should.
Anyone else have this issue? Any fixes? Thanks.
Fixed it. At least for now.
Go to Task Manager >> Surface DTX. End the task. Then go to startup. Disable. Then enable.
Restart your comp.
When I did that, I now get the correct status (Surface Detach: Ready to Detach).
