VPN Client Support

Just saw on Facebook (posted 12 hours ago) that Cisco is still unable to do any work towards bringing a client to Windows RT due to limitations with the platform. The APIs are still nonexistent.

Are we beating a dead horse?  Should we just move tablet experiences to a competitor? In the future when office becomes deprecated that might be the thing we have to do anyway.

I don't know why this is so hard. The network stack is the same. If Microsoft really wanted to make this happen, just let Cisco recompile their current (desktop) VPN client for ARM, send it to Microsoft for a signature, and release it some way, say via the store, windows update, a special download, or even as part of 8.1. Would that be so horrible??!? I'm probably going to be working in the desktop if I'm connected to work stuff via VPN anyway... it'd be fine as a desktop app.

I know that the enterprise level companies are viewing the RT because of its' relative low cost but VPN is very important part in their IT scheme and if Cisco won't make the effort for it, looks like a Pro model will have to be used.  The RT will remain at the low end of the spectrum for Windows tablets and without the capability of installing real software, that eliminates attaching a USB type WiFi adapter that will support the Cisco VPN client solutions out there.

Myself, I have not heard of anything more on the VPN solutions being worked on.  Most of that is still being kept quiet.

I am hearing good reviews of the Samsung ATIV Pro models and would recommend going in the direction of the tablets that support the x86 code set.  Some companies also have their own software as well which would fit the picture better than a RT model.

It is a shame.

Mine works better with the 8.1 Preview but only goes online instantly on Tuesdays and Saturdays.  Any other day and I have to wait a few moments on the lock screen and tell it to reboot about two or three times.  In all cases, it shows the network connections but if I don't wait and try to force it to connect, then it says there are no connections available even though it shows 5 bars.

No, that piece of junk is unreliable and I use it as a weather station when I do get it online.  it is a shame since everything else on it works perfect.  Bluetooth connects to anything and I had gotten the type cover for it along with the Microsoft Wedge Mouse and both of those work perfect as well.  Just cannot rely on it to connect.  The adapter works perfect.  There is still an issue with the Marvel drivers and Marvel has to fix that.  They are the one's who wrote the drivers, not Microsoft.

The trick of uninstalling the driver and rebooting the tablet no longer works with 8.1 Preview.  It did in 8.0 though.

The last I heard about a month ago from a Juniper person, they are working with Microsoft on a VPN solution for RT.  This still might make the 8.1 cut as MS is still tweaking that for the OEM release in August.

Per James' issue with WiFi, I had issues too until a firmware update fixed the issue.  I also moved to the 8.1 preview and have had no WiFi issues.  Could also be an actually hardware issue as all devices sometimes have those.
