Bit Locker Recovery Key Requested at Boot Time

Hi,

At the weekend our two Surface 2 devices got a firmware update installed. My Surface 2 updated and rebooted fine with no issues.

But my wife's Surface 2 (64GB model) asked for the Bitlocker Recovery key at boot after the update, and now every time it reboots. Although I have the key this is very poor end user experience.

Especially as I am trying to sell her the Surface 2 over an iPad.

Any assistance in this would be most welcome.

Hi,

Microsoft released an update for this today, for Surface 2 devices, as reflected in KB article 2921482.  Please check for Windows updates and install the latest updates.

Here's how to check for updates manually:

Step 1: Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings.   (If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Settings.)

Step 2: Tap or click Change PC settings, tap or click Update and recovery, and then tap or click Windows Update. 

Step 3: Tap or click Check now. 

Step 4: If there are updates available, tap or click View details. 

Step 5: Tap or click to select the ones you want to install, and then tap or click Install.  You may need to restart Surface after the updates have been installed.

    I reinstalled Windows RT on 19Nov. Just after the reinstall the Bitlocker log showed a warning with Event-ID 793 a few times, but since then no further error/warning recording in the Bitlocker log. I make now and then a restart to provoke the problem, but no Bitlocker problem so far.  It looks promising, but I am a bit worried that the Bitlocker log doesn’t even logs events of type Information . It would be nice if Microsoft can give us an explanation of what might have happened, but this surely is too much to ask for?

    My son's Surface 2 keeps requiring him to enter his bitlocker key every time he shuts it down.  He is shutting it down properly using the charms menu.  When he tries to turn it back on after a complete shutdown, it always prompts him for his bitlocker key.  This is getting very annoying.

    Does anyone know what could be causing this?  Could this be a sign of a hardware failure?  The device seems to work properly after he enters the key.  Is there something that can be repaired to stop this from happening (short of removing bitlocker security)?

    Greetings CharlesCoates,

    The Windows team has published a public statement relating to some of our Surface 2 devices prompting for the BitLocker key upon reboot.    The public support article is located here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2921482   Our plan is to release the update during the January 14 Patch Tuesday cycle.  Please see below for more information and the link to the article.  

    To retrieve your BitLocker recovery key if you do not have it available, follow these steps:

    1.     Open a browser window on another trusted computer or mobile device.

    2.     Go to the following Windows website:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/recoverykey

    3.     Sign in by using the same Microsoft account name and password that you use on your Surface 2 device.

    Hey everyone

    I have the same exact problem. Whenever it reboots let's say for updates or things like that i have to enter the bitlocker key. This is really starting to annoy me.
