Bit Locker Recovery Key Requested at Boot Time

Hi,

At the weekend our two Surface 2 devices got a firmware update installed. My Surface 2 updated and rebooted fine with no issues.

But my wife's Surface 2 (64GB model) asked for the Bitlocker Recovery key at boot after the update, and now every time it reboots. Although I have the key this is very poor end user experience.

Especially as I am trying to sell her the Surface 2 over an iPad.

Any assistance in this would be most welcome.

Hi,

Microsoft released an update for this today, for Surface 2 devices, as reflected in KB article 2921482.  Please check for Windows updates and install the latest updates.

Here's how to check for updates manually:

Step 1: Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings.   (If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Settings.)

Step 2: Tap or click Change PC settings, tap or click Update and recovery, and then tap or click Windows Update. 

Step 3: Tap or click Check now. 

Step 4: If there are updates available, tap or click View details. 

Step 5: Tap or click to select the ones you want to install, and then tap or click Install.  You may need to restart Surface after the updates have been installed.

    Is this a known solution or just a suggestion? The issue is related to firmware and hardware. How would changing the account type affect that?

    The instructions on the screen or other entries in this thread tell you how to do it. All in plain English and very easy to follow. Turn your computer on, wait until you get the screen up requesting the recovery key and read there where to go to get the key which you then type into the area for the key (It's not a real brass key like one uses to open a front door but a long chain of numbers!).:):)

    I turned on my surface today and it comes to the blue bitlocker page asking for my recovery key. This had never happened before. I followed the prompts to find my key through my Microsoft account. Where I learn I don't have one. When I try to skip this drive it won't let me continue to the device or refresh the pc. I don't want to reset. What doi do? Why is it asking me for this? Why don't I have a recovery key according to Microsoft? Final question how do I get one do I can use my device? I am beyond irritated right now.

    I too have had this issue come up just today - seeing that I won my Surface 2 in a contest from Surface themselves and that they shipped it completely set up, I never had to do a recovery set up for it...

    You know, "just in case there is a problem with your Surface tablet".

    I've never had a tech problem before like this, and seeing I've been in IT for a while, I've never had to use this wonderfully useless product (ie: BitLocker) and now I am locked out of my device.

    I just need to find a way to:

    A) get a recovery key for my Surface 2

    B) disable BitLocker completely

    Any help would be WONDERFUL!

    When you turn on your Surface normally, you sign in with an account that has an email address and a password; that's your Microsoft account. If it was set up for you, you've been using the account of the person who set it up; ask them what they used.
