Surface Pen or Multi-touch not working after Fall Creators update is installed on Surface Pro 4 or Surface Book

After installing the new fall creator update, my surface pro 4 pen no longer writes, erases or interacts with the screen at all. All the buttons function normally. I used the Microsoft diagnostic trouble tree which had me replace batteries re-install the device, which did nothing. Is anyone else having this issue after the Fall Creator update installed, and if so do you have a solution? Thanks.

Hi everyone,

Today, we released an update to the Intel® Precise Touch driver (Intel Corporation – HIDClass – 1.2.0.99). This driver resolves an issue where after Surface Pro 4 or Surface Book wakes from sleep, the touch driver will no longer respond to multi-touch input (like pinch to zoom) or the pen does not write.

We recommend that you install the latest updates to keep your Surface performing its best. You can get updates now by checking Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.

You can find the details of the latest update on our Surface update history page.

Greg

does pinch to zoom fail as well? others have found that going into device

manager and disabling/enabling the "Intel(R) Precise Touch Device" made both the

pen and the multi-touch work again.

This did not work for me.  I could not find the Intel Precise Touch Device in device manager. Can you be more specific?

Does pinch to zoom fail as well when in this condition? others have found that going into device manager and disabling/enabling the "Intel(R) Precise Touch Device" in device manager made both the pen and the multi-touch work again. Less disruptive than restarting. And the problem will probably re-occur.

Open device manager,  Click on human interface devices to expand it and it should be near the bottom of the list. This is a temporary fix and the issue may return, but for now, it is the only work around.

Engineering asked that anyone afflicted with this use the Feedback Hub App to send in a bug while in the bad state before disabling/re-enabling so that they can get the logs.

    Hello.

This is an issue I've come to Microsoft with before, and it seems I'm not the only one. I have a Surface Pro 4, for which I've had a Surface Pen. My pen, however, has been malfunctioning. In essence, it stops writing. I can still use the buttons and my screen responds to touch, my keyboard still works, etc., but my pen simply will not write. Most puzzling, this problem comes and goes seemingly at random. The pen will be completely nonfunctional for hours at a time and then, without warning, will write flawlessly again. I've tried every troubleshooting tip to no avail, and have even replaced the battery. Replacing the battery helped briefly, but the problem has persisted. I went back again and tried the troubleshooting tips, but they haven't stuck. As someone who bought this tablet to help me with my digital art, it's really unhelpful to have a malfunctioning pen. I'm starting to doubt that a solution exists that's going to last for more than a few weeks. Any suggestions other than the obvious laundry list of troubleshooting tips that got me nowhere the first two times I did them all?

    Hi thanks Barb.

I have it working now. I went on the trouble shooter and it fixed it after a restart.

    Thanks
