Battery not detected Surface Pro 3

This just happened to me right now on a Surface Pro 3.  I had used the machine yesterday no problem, put it to sleep, then this morning it would not power up.  I plugged it into AC and it came on fine - and told me no battery was detected.

I shutdown and restarted several times, didn't make a difference.  I then tried shutting down, and powering up using the power button + volume up button.  This forces it to the BIOS/UEFI screen.  I then exited BIOS without saving any changes, and let it restart.  The battery is detected again and seems to be charging......

If it happens again I'll be asking for a replacement.

Hi All,

I was experiencing the same issue as reported here.   My issue was fixed with the help of a chat technician.    I just received my unit and powered it up, all was well for 2 days then I encountered this issue.  After plugging in my unit for 24 hours with no luck.   I unplugged the power adapter and could not power the unit up.

Steps to correct my issue:

  1. After booting the system with the power adapter connected, Hold Down the power button until the unit powers itself off.   (Do not swipe down.)
  2. Disconnect the power adapter from the unit.

3) Press and hold the Power Button (wait for a depleted system battery icon full screen)

  1. re-connect the power adapter to the unit.
  2. Press and hold the volume up and Power button for 15 seconds.   (the unit keyboard will light up then power down if you hold it the full 15 seconds.)
  3. Press and hold the volume up and power button until the keyboard lights up (about 5 seconds)
  4. If the system/bios menu appears, select exit and restart
  5. Battery is present and charging.

Note:  This should be a one time fix, I suspect that it never charged until I went through the steps listed above.   I hopes this helps others with the same issue.

    Hi all -

Been having some battery/power issues recently on my SP3 that I was hoping you guys might be able to give me some advice on. It's been a PITA to troubleshoot because there's not been any variable I can really control for the sake of troubleshooting.

I recently traveled to Korea, noticing to my pleasant surprise that the SP3 psu accepts up to 240V (Korea is 220). So after a few days of using a more formal chunky transverter/adapter that I had brought with no ill effects, when I returned from an outing at night to notice my SP3 was dead, I switched over to just putting a simple prong adapter on my US prong'd psu cable and plugging in directly.

As soon as I did, I noticed that the system was telling me the battery could not be detected. I tried doing the volume up+power reset multiple times to no avail. I also tried doing the battery driver uninstall trick then rebooting but that didn't do anything either. Most of the time it gave me the battery not detected red X, a few times/at brief moments, it said plugged in and not charging. I even tried cashing in on a restore point but it gave me an error and said some system file could not be changed. After several rounds of trying the up+power, I said **** it and decided to try more in the morning.

I woke up and decided to take off the prong adapter and go back to using my chunky transverter to plug my SP3 in. For a minute, that seemed to do the trick, and my battery charged up to 20%, slower than usual I thought... then it stopped charging. It said plugged in and charging but the number would not go above 20%. After wrestling with resets and driver uninstalls and system recoveries again, I did a system refresh, which still left me with the stuck at 20% issue.

I then tried to install the backlog of 135 updates left after the refresh; I left the computer alone while the updates took forever to install, and I noticed that by the time it was done, the battery was at 70%!... and would not go above 70% I even tried shutting off the system proper then leaving it plugged in and it still would not go above 70%!

So here I write to you with that 70% trickling down, wondering what is up. I don't think I dinged my SP3 anywhere, and I'd like to think the PSU couldn't have been fried, but maybe that was the case? Is my battery fried? Microsoft Korea in Seoul was useless when I called the number, saying Complete requests needed to be fulfilled through the country in which I had bought my unit (the US). edit: just tried plugging it in after it dropped to 58%, getting "plugged in not charging." The system, based on the taskbar tray icon, also seems to be very slow at picking up/unable to pick up when I'm plugging in or unplugging the charger from the SP3, seeming to notice mostly when I manually click the icon to make it expand (and refresh I guess).

    Thanks!
