Surface Pro 3 - Windows 10 - WiFi (slow or limited connectivity )

Have a Surface Pro 3 that worked fine till I updated to Win10.  Now the wireless connection seems to randomly go to a "limited connectivity" mode.  Fortunately was purchased from Costco a coupe of weeks ago so it is going back there if we can't get this figured out by Sunday.

The Surface Pro3 is a flagship device - why in the world would you subject your customers to have to resort to looking for help in forums like this?

Everyone,

Build 10586 - the November Windows 10 update - was released yesterday, and it contains a newer Marvell wireless driver 15.68.9032.47 - people are reporting that this greatly improves wireless connectivity. Please download the large update, and if you used the registry hack, reverse it as follows:

Press Windows button. Search for regedit. Open it

  1. Navigate to the following path:

 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\mrvlpcie8897

  1. Find the item labeled “TXAMSDU”. Double tap and modify the value from 0 to 1
  2. Restart the machine

Then test your connectivity, and post results.

Fred,

the November Windows 10 update to build 10586 has new wireless drivers. Can you download and install the update (it should be offered via WU) and let us know if this changes your connectivity?

Penny,

These kinds of issues WERE present on 8.1 for months but they mostly all cleared after several driver updates.

And that particular router is not one known to exhibit slow wifi. I'm suggesting you trade it because it is SP new and you can now get one with 10 pre-installed and not have to go through an upgrade AND because you have this issue. Getting it swapped will rule out a hardware issue and would be a step forward.

This is what *I* would do if in this situation.

For what it's worth - Microsoft needs to fix the driver and any underlying Win 10 OS issues. It took them 9 months to get a "good" Windows 8.1 wireless driver. For now, consider an external USB wireless adapter. I carry around a http://www.amazon.com/Edimax-EW-7811UTC-Dual-Band-Connectivity-Exceeding/dp/B00FW6T36Y

Oh I forgot one important part! I have the Arc Touch mouse as well, when I turned off the Bluetooth the speed was fine again on 2GHz, when I turned it back on with the mouse connected, the 2GHz speed was cut in half to about 45 megs down... When I left Bluetooth on but shut off the mouse (clicking it out of the arc position) The speed was back to normal on 2GHz even with Bluetooth enabled! So the mouse was really my issue. If you have anything connected to your device through Bluetooth, I would suggest trying each device to see if one of them is causing interference... It shouldn't be doing that to begin with, but it could very well be a problem with drivers! We have to keep in mind that Windows 10 is a brand new operating system that is going to be ever evolving thanks to Windows as a "service". I have a feeling this is the first of many kinks that need to be ironed out! Hope this helps!

Hi Penny! I'm sorry to say you're in the same boat as a lot of other people! I'm about 90% sure at this point that its a an issue with Windows 10! I have a Surface 3 at the moment, which I bought about a week ago. Everything was golden until installed a few updates and realized that my internet was acting up. I have 175 megabits down on my iMac which is connected by hardline... Before buying my S3 I had the pro 3 which was amazing, but it was a bit impractical for what I needed so I managed to sell it for a very good price and in turn bought the Surface 3 which was perfect for me (never once had an issue with the Pro 3)... Well after installing the updates for Windows 10 I started realizing that my internet was slow! I have a dual band router and I use the 5GHz frequency on all my wireless devices. I couldn't figure out why it was so slow so I did just about everything I could think of... Reset my gateway, my router, the surface itself (using recovery drive I completely wiped it) nothing was working! Even my 2GHz band was slow but only on the Surface! All of my other devices were running fine! Then I came across a message board concerning the topic and one user reported that after shutting off Bluetooth, the speed was back to normal on the 2 GHz frequency, but not the 5GHz... I tried it out and sure enough, worked lovely! The 2GHz was pulling 95 megs a second (which was a bit surprising considering my average speed on 2GHz before that was about 60 megs and 110 for the 5GHz)... Another person reported that when he switched his 5GHz band to A only instead of A/N mixed, and the problem was solved... I only have an N router so I couldn't try that but if your router is AC capable I would suggest giving that a shot.... I do find it weird that my 2GHz band is basically performing at the level my 5GHz band was at before noticing all of this but I'm not complaining since all of the heavy lifting on my network has always been done from my iMac since its hardwired through Ethernet. I would suggest giving that a shot before thinking about returning your device! I absolutely love the Surface line and I just think this issue is a problem with Windows and not the hardware inside your device. Def talk to someone at the store you bought it from if you're feeling weary! The Pro 3 is a significant amount of money and I wouldn't want you to wait too long just to have to go through Microsoft in the end! See if they'll swap it out for another one and if the issue persists then you'll know its a software issue! I might do the same myself just to be completely sure! As I said before I had the Pro 3 since it was released up until I sold it last week and bought the regular 3... Never once did I have an issue with that device! I came across a few other posts where people with different computers were having the same exact issue. That's why I think its a problem in Windows... Hope everything works out for you! Feel free to ask me anything if you have any other issues or just let me know if you found out the issue! Have a wonderful day!
