Surface Pro 3 - Windows 10 - WiFi (slow or limited connectivity )

Have a Surface Pro 3 that worked fine till I updated to Win10.  Now the wireless connection seems to randomly go to a "limited connectivity" mode.  Fortunately was purchased from Costco a coupe of weeks ago so it is going back there if we can't get this figured out by Sunday.

The Surface Pro3 is a flagship device - why in the world would you subject your customers to have to resort to looking for help in forums like this?

Everyone,

Build 10586 - the November Windows 10 update - was released yesterday, and it contains a newer Marvell wireless driver 15.68.9032.47 - people are reporting that this greatly improves wireless connectivity. Please download the large update, and if you used the registry hack, reverse it as follows:

Press Windows button. Search for regedit. Open it

  1. Navigate to the following path:

 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\mrvlpcie8897

  1. Find the item labeled “TXAMSDU”. Double tap and modify the value from 0 to 1
  2. Restart the machine

Then test your connectivity, and post results.

Fred,

the November Windows 10 update to build 10586 has new wireless drivers. Can you download and install the update (it should be offered via WU) and let us know if this changes your connectivity?

These kinds of issues WERE present on 8.1 for months but they mostly all cleared after several driver updates.

And that particular router is not one known to exhibit slow wifi. I'm suggesting you trade it because it is SP new and you can now get one with 10 pre-installed and not have to go through an upgrade AND because you have this issue. Getting it swapped will rule out a hardware issue and would be a step forward.

This is what *I* would do if in this situation.

For what it's worth - Microsoft needs to fix the driver and any underlying Win 10 OS issues. It took them 9 months to get a "good" Windows 8.1 wireless driver.     This is a driver issue

    I suspect it is something more complicated than that. I don't know what yet, but all I can share is my testing results which seem to prove something else is going on.

    My co-worker has a Surface Pro 3 that came with Windows 8.1 on it. She's had it for a while, and just upgraded to Windows 10 last week after doing a factory reset on the OS (while still in 8.1). I asked to borrow the device to do speed tests on my home network which is causing me problems. It is the same model (SP3, i5, 128 GB). The only main differences I can think of is the age, hers shipped with 8.1, and it has a Hynix-branded SSD instead of a Samsung model.

    I brought it home, joined the 5 GHz network, and ran speed tests on both my ISP's speed test page and on speedtest.net. Sure enough, it was getting over 140 Mbps down and 11 Mbps up, which is what I would want to get on mine. Nothing else appeared to be installed besides what came with the Surface. Like I said, it was an upgrade to Windows 10 on top of a freshly-reset 8.1 install. She has the same driver installed with the same brand/model of wireless NIC. I wouldn't have believed it until I saw it with my own eyes.

    I've tried all kinds of things to resolve this including resetting and re-configuring my router. Tonight, I'm going to try doing a factory reset on the SP3 and see what happens. I've seen others not have success, but, who knows, maybe I'll get lucky.

    I too have this agonizingly slow performance on 5 ghz wifi with the surface 3. This also with an Asus wireless router.

    This is a driver issue, as I reinstalled the older Windows 10 wireless driver, and 5 ghz performance improved significantly.

    I reinstalled the newest driver, and 5 ghz wireless is terrible again. I'm just using 2.4 ghz right now and waiting for future driver updates. As others have mentioned, this looks to be a driver immaturity issue because of the newness of Windows 10.
