Surface Pro 3 - Windows 10 - WiFi (slow or limited connectivity )

Have a Surface Pro 3 that worked fine till I updated to Win10.  Now the wireless connection seems to randomly go to a "limited connectivity" mode.  Fortunately was purchased from Costco a coupe of weeks ago so it is going back there if we can't get this figured out by Sunday.

The Surface Pro3 is a flagship device - why in the world would you subject your customers to have to resort to looking for help in forums like this?

Everyone,

Build 10586 - the November Windows 10 update - was released yesterday, and it contains a newer Marvell wireless driver 15.68.9032.47 - people are reporting that this greatly improves wireless connectivity. Please download the large update, and if you used the registry hack, reverse it as follows:

Press Windows button. Search for regedit. Open it

  1. Navigate to the following path:

 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\mrvlpcie8897

  1. Find the item labeled “TXAMSDU”. Double tap and modify the value from 0 to 1
  2. Restart the machine

Then test your connectivity, and post results.

Fred,

the November Windows 10 update to build 10586 has new wireless drivers. Can you download and install the update (it should be offered via WU) and let us know if this changes your connectivity?

Penny,

These kinds of issues WERE present on 8.1 for months but they mostly all cleared after several driver updates.

And that particular router is not one known to exhibit slow wifi. I'm suggesting you trade it because it is SP new and you can now get one with 10 pre-installed and not have to go through an upgrade AND because you have this issue. Getting it swapped will rule out a hardware issue and would be a step forward.

This is what *I* would do if in this situation.

For what it's worth - Microsoft needs to fix the driver and any underlying Win 10 OS issues. It took them 9 months to get a "good" Windows 8.1 wireless driver.     just the 2 SP 3 Pro machines dont work.

    Or just W10 + updates?   <eg>

    FWIW I just rebooted and had to go through the same procedure again.  No Profiles, so no password?  How do we get these things stored?  I suppose I could do an export from my Surface RT and then import on the Surface Pro.  But again, what do people do who don't have other devices that are working properly?

    Heh.  We can export but can't import?  WTH?  How do they come up with this stuff?

    Anyway, by ignoring the new "modern UI" and going with the CP UI I was able to get a profile stored (according to netsh).  Now maybe I will be able to continue connecting automatically.

    You're indicating that you get connected one way sometimes and a different way sometimes?  Have you checked which profile is being used each time?  If there are different ones that you don't really want why not get rid of them?  (I still don't know what I did that blasted all of mine out of existence.)

    While researching my problem I saw someone mentioning profile Priority, as if you can change the order of selection or something.  Haven't found yet where to do that

    either with netsh or the new "modern" UI.

    So, apparently the command is  netsh wlan set profileorder.  Priority is one of its keyword operands, where the operand is required but the keyword is optional:

    PS>netsh wlan set profileorder ?

    Usage: set profileorder [name=]<string> [interface=]<string> [priority=]<integer>

    I've got Windows 10 right out of the box so reverting to 8.1 is not an option.

    Connecting to the internet is not a problem my speed and reliability is good there.  The problem is connecting to other network resources and streaming files or moving files when connected to the 5Ghz AC Band.  As you know, on the network adapter, I can manually select whether to use 2.4, 5 or Auto.  When using 5Ghz or Auto I have problems.  When I select 2.4 Ghz I can stream files between devices but as you know, it’s much slower than what a 5Ghz connection should be.

    I took some screenshots of data rates when copying or moving files.  As you can see on the slower 2.4 Ghz band I get between 7 and 15 MB /second

    But on the faster 5ghz band I get  between 0 and 10 KB/ second.
