Surface 2 Speaker/Sound Problems

I just purchased two new Surface 2's and I am noticing a significant reduction in volume from the speakers compared to my old Surface RT.  The speakers also lack any kind of bass.  They are very "tinny" and shallow sounding.  When using headphones, there is plenty of bass sound and the volume level is not an issue.

I am also experienceing a significant amount of sound crackling (from the speakers and attached headphones) when streaming video from Amazon Instant Video using both the desktop and metro versions of IE.  I do not experience this crackling problem with other sound sources like Xbox music, gaming, or other website streaming video (i.e. YouTube).

Since I was experiencing this on two different Surface 2's, it seems unlikely that this is a hardware issue.  This is most likely a software/driver issue.  Is there anything that I can do to resolve this problem, other than wait for a possible software or firmware update?

    I restarted and it installed the miracast and high definition codecs, but would not install the Tegra driver or codec. Even going to the device manager and trying the update automatically would result in an error message saying the device could not properly be configured.

    I'm not sure where the 8/14 versions came from, maybe as part of the automatic driver update attempt, or were never deleted from when I told it to delete drivers. Either way it would not let me install the new drivers, even selecting them manually, until after the 8/14 drivers had been installed for either the device or the codec.

    In my case I only had to downgrade the NVidia Tegra Audio driver. After that, system required me to restart.  The speaker sound louder again.

    I habe the same problem. In my case it looks like the following...

    • Latest driver "NVIDIA Tegra Audio", version 9.17.13.2757
    • Deactivate  "Signalverbesserung / Signal correction" on both, headphone and speaker, otherwise no sound will work
    • The sound on my is headphones is OK and loud enough
    • The sound via my speaker is very (too) quite

    I called Surface Support and a guy named Mitchell talked me through the problem. 

    First do a refresh and that will take your Surface to the previous firmware version.  Then do a  windows update, and download all the new updates (it will take a while - mine had 22 updates).  Make sure your Surface is plugged in and can access the internet the whole time. 

    Once the update is complete you will be able to edit the bass/treble settings via the sound control panel.  Sound is much louder and better now - very happy :)

    He said it was due to a an incomplete installation of the update...
