I'm having the same problem with my speakers cracking once in a while! I assume Microsoft will release a firmware update later on this week of next. Other than that the device is great!
Surface 2 Speaker/Sound Problems
I just purchased two new Surface 2's and I am noticing a significant reduction in volume from the speakers compared to my old Surface RT. The speakers also lack any kind of bass. They are very "tinny" and shallow sounding. When using headphones, there is plenty of bass sound and the volume level is not an issue.
I am also experienceing a significant amount of sound crackling (from the speakers and attached headphones) when streaming video from Amazon Instant Video using both the desktop and metro versions of IE. I do not experience this crackling problem with other sound sources like Xbox music, gaming, or other website streaming video (i.e. YouTube).
Since I was experiencing this on two different Surface 2's, it seems unlikely that this is a hardware issue. This is most likely a software/driver issue. Is there anything that I can do to resolve this problem, other than wait for a possible software or firmware update?
Thanks.

2013-10-25T06:43:13+00:00 Hey everybody,
I just talked with Microsoft support about the sound/speaker problem. It doesn’t seem to be a software error. They suggested me to get a replacement. Yesterday I got a new Surface 2 from my local retailer. Now everything is fine.

Even at max volume, the volume is not really high and it is crackling a bit.

Will be doing so at the store I bought from later today, will see if that solves the issue.

2013-10-25T13:58:52+00:00 Mine does this as well during XBOX Music playback but I didn't hear it playing a movie using XBOX Movie or a Youtube Music video...I am assuming this is software related vs hardware for sure...Similar to when the Surface first came out and the notifications were crackling when they came through it...That got fixed as well...
