Surface 2 Speaker/Sound Problems

I am still having this problem. If volume is greater than 80 % there is significant crackling / popping.

This is most noticeable on voice. For example watching TV on Hulu or Netflix. The problem occurs using Xbox video with local stored videos. I have updated everything. If I turn off enhanced audio this fixes the problem but the audio is so quite I can't listen to Hulu , Netflix or music. Has anyone found a fix for this yet. I have had this since Oct 2013 and with each update this problem does not get any better. So many updated have been very rocky!  I am starting to believe Microsoft cut corners regarding the speakers. This is a very disappointing issues especially when you need to have the volume great than 80%. This plus other issues has turned me off to future surface purchases.

After the March 11th Patch Tuesday the sound seems to have improved.  The volume is still not as strong as the Surface 1 however the sound does seem fuller.  I played some classical music that has a full range of sound.  I also played some online videos that sounded acceptable.  I think there is still room for improvement however it doesn't sound complete garbage anymore.  If this is an NVIDIA driver issue then I hope they don't ignore the Tetra 4 in favor of their new platform.  I hate it when companies go on about their latest and greatest product only to abandon long before its life cycle is over.

How is everyone else's experience post patch?

It does seem like ever since NVIDIA announced their Tegra K1 chip, they've been rather silent about the future of the Tegra 4.  It would not surprise me if Microsoft was doing the bulk of updates for a chip they didn't even design.  At least the Tegra 3 had the benefit of being a more mature product thanks to being on the market for a few years.  The Tegra 4 seems to be old news already.

I purchased a Surface 2 yesterday.  I currently own the Surface RT or we can simply call it the Surface 1.  I spent yesterday moving my files overs, getting my profiles in sync, and downloading/installing all Updates from Windows Updates. 

Tonight I opened up Xbox Music and played a song.  My wife and I thought the audio seemed off.  It sounded like the music was coming out of a tin can.  I plugged it into my stereo and was prompted with an error messages.  I should have written it down.  I checked the event logs and cannot find the event.  It stated that the Audio Device or HDMI connecter was having an issue.  Sound did play through my Radio however it sounded odd and tiny through that as well.  I have a Bose Wave Radio and it often sounds better than most devices its size and always sounds better than any tablet I've owned or listened to.  So I thought this was odd.  My wife commented that to her ears the singer and the music seemed out of beat.  Then it occurred to me that there wasn't any beat. 

I grabbed my Surface one and played the same song.  Not only did it sound clearer I also heard the highs and mids.  I put the two devices next to each other and set them to sound level 30.  I played the same song at the same time.  I managed to get them synced enough that they sounded like they were streaming from the same source.  I should have heard stereo sound at the same volume.  The Surface one drowned out the Surface 2 at the same sound level.  When I turned down the Surface 1 I could barely hear the Surface 2.  I turned it up to 80 and finally achieved the same sound volume as the Surface 1 at 30. 

I plugged the Surface 1 into my Bose and the music sounded much better.  I had highs, mids, and lows.  Next I plugged in some ear buds.  I figured that I would eliminate the sound processor from the Bose.  I had the same experience.  Finally, I went to an old Cambridge SoundWorks computer surround system that I keep around for music in my workshop.  I have some control over the base with this system.  I played them both and experienced the same distorted, tinny sound I had on the Bose and the headphones with the Surface 2.  The Surface 1 sounded fine.  I had to really crank up the base to hear any base with the Surface 2.

So, my question is this.  How do I equalize the sound on the Surface 2 to match something comparable to my Surface 1?  I'm giving up the Surface 1 to a friend of mine so keeping the product is not an option.  It's not even a good solution even if I did keep the product.  All updates have been applied.  I've rebooted the device several times.  I've also searched the internet for similar issues and found plenty of folks complaining about the sound.  What can I do about this?  Is this a defective product?
