Surface 2 Speaker/Sound Problems

I just purchased two new Surface 2's and I am noticing a significant reduction in volume from the speakers compared to my old Surface RT.  The speakers also lack any kind of bass.  They are very "tinny" and shallow sounding.  When using headphones, there is plenty of bass sound and the volume level is not an issue.

I am also experienceing a significant amount of sound crackling (from the speakers and attached headphones) when streaming video from Amazon Instant Video using both the desktop and metro versions of IE.  I do not experience this crackling problem with other sound sources like Xbox music, gaming, or other website streaming video (i.e. YouTube).

Since I was experiencing this on two different Surface 2's, it seems unlikely that this is a hardware issue.  This is most likely a software/driver issue.  Is there anything that I can do to resolve this problem, other than wait for a possible software or firmware update?

Thanks.

I'm having the same issue too. Got mine replaced hoping mine was a defected unit but no luck. The return went smooth and straight forward, not being asked too many unnecessary questions which I found pleasant. I asked them if they heard of others having the same problem but they seem to know nothing about it even though i've found threads of people having an issue with their surface 2 online. I really do hope a fix comes in coz otherwise this device is great. Its just frustrating to deal with the sound.

I stil have problems With the crackeling sound on high pitch noices. This is a problem in most apps including plex and Xbox Music. Is everyone still having problwm With this also?

I'm still having the same problem as well. I'm thinking of having it replaced with a new one but will contact MS first.   It's a shame because this is my only issue.  I'm really enjoying my surface.

My replacement surface 2 came in today.  Even after all updates, the sound is perfect across the board.  Even Netflix, youtube and other web videos sound good.

I had the speaker problem where everything sounded bad, even the system sound test.  Left speaker was 30% of the right speaker.  Right speaker still not very loud.  Both speakers distorted, tinny, and sounded blown.  It started right after an update that first weekend after release.  Bluetooth and ear buds sounded amazing.  It was only the built-in speakers that were bad.

So if your audio symptoms are like mine, go to the surface support website or fall back on your retailer's warranty plan or what have you.  That's what I did and going to Microsoft support via the online chat was not a terrible experience.  For a bad situation, I'd even go so far as saying the service was excellent.  It took them 4 business days to get me a replacement under the Advanced replacement program (you guarantee you'll send the broken surface back to MS after you get your replacement -- with your credit card).

But even while my internal speakers were terrible, everything else was excellent.  I still had my surface with me everywhere I went and it still became an invaluable part of my life.  So, sometimes you get a lemon (and I'm notorious for getting the lemons!), but MS made it right with as little pain as possible.

So your replacement after all the updates has high speaker volume, similar to the Surface RT?  That is my biggest complaint, the sound from the speakers lacks volume and fullness.  I have really never experienced the crackling (except streaming Amazon Instant Video).  I'm just not sure what I am experiencing is a hardware issue.

At 100% volume, it is ok I suppose, but it just doesn't have any fullness or bass to the sound.  I know these are just small speakers and I can't expect great sound, but my speakers are definitely inferior to the Surface RT.

I just don't know what to do.

I don't have the original surface RT to which I can compare, but it sounds really good to me.  It's not a boombox, but I never expected it to be such.  heh heh.
