USB3 Drive Base Disconnecting During Write Cycle

OK, this is an interesting problem.

So, I have an external SSD in a USB3 enclosure, and I've been moving my Steam Library onto it.

The SSD is a Samsung EVO 850, 500GB drive. I've tried two different enclosures, a Startech and an Orico. Both behave the same way.

The enclosure is hooked up through the keyboard base of the Surface Book via one of the USB3 ports.

The problem I'm encountering is when the drive is busy writing files the base seems to disconnect and the drive disappears. It eventually remounts, but of course the damage is done... 

To test this issue, I ran Crystal Disk Mark 5 on the external drive, and the read cycle is fine. Once the write cycle begins, it seems to hang up and then suddenly the drive disconnects.

Anyone have any idea what might be going on here?

    You're lucky you were able to return it. I was just told that since there is no fix right now I'll have to wait to see if a firmware update solves it (Microsoft Store Employee)

    Has anyone tried a different OS to see if that has an issue?

    Update : upgraded my desktop to Windows 10 and the drive works fine on my desktop.

    Even tried a factory reset of the Surface to no avail...

    Looks like a mod mover my original question into that thread.  My issue might be related to this one here but I'm not 100% sure of it.

    Mine does not happen on heavy writes... it just happens all the time.  It seems to be related to UASP.

    Looks like my Surface Book is having issues with writing to my UASP(USB Attached SCSI) External disk enclosure.  I run a ICYRaid MB662U3-2S R1 enclosure with 2 disks in Raid 1.   When I try to write on the disk, it will sort of start but then will hang forever.

    The Task manager show the drive has having 100% wait time

    In the event log, I get the following :

    The IO operation at logical block address 0x698c00 for Disk 1 (PDO name: \Device\0000011f) was retried.

    The external drive enclosure works A1 on my other laptop, running in UASP mode under Windows 8.1.  Also works A1 on my Desktop, also running Windows 8.1.  I'm now upgrading my desktop to Windows 10 to see if I could replicate the issue.

    I'm pretty sure UASP is the cause because it will hang on all the ports (including those on the dock) but adding a USB 2 hub to my surface and connecting the drive though it (disabling UASP) fixes the problem (but I get terrible performance)

    I have had the same issues.  I went through two Samsung T1 SSD's under heavy write I get the same errors in event viewer finally the entire USB bus will crash and the drives will disconnect.  As well as the Surface Dock which is just a USB 3.0 dock with Microsoft's specific connector.  It has to be either a firmware or software updated need.  It seems the be across the board.

    This is so frustrating!  If I could, I would have returned my Surface Book.  The USB is basic, nothing new, it is not unreasonable to assume that is should work perfectly!  Like you, I have the Samsung T1 that is worthless with the Surface Book.  It works flawlessly on my Lenovo and my HP.  Do you hear that MS - HP and Lenovo?

    Now during the Microsoft event he shows off copying 3 GB from his USB SSD, which looks like the T1, and no issues.  Is it working for him or did he just get lucky.  I purchased my Surface Book from this presentation.  Call me the fool?
