OK, this is an interesting problem.
So, I have an external SSD in a USB3 enclosure, and I've been moving my Steam Library onto it.
The SSD is a Samsung EVO 850, 500GB drive. I've tried two different enclosures, a Startech and an Orico. Both behave the same way.
The enclosure is hooked up through the keyboard base of the Surface Book via one of the USB3 ports.
The problem I'm encountering is when the drive is busy writing files the base seems to disconnect and the drive disappears. It eventually remounts, but of course the damage is done...
To test this issue, I ran Crystal Disk Mark 5 on the external drive, and the read cycle is fine. Once the write cycle begins, it seems to hang up and then suddenly the drive disconnects.
Anyone have any idea what might be going on here?

I always thought that Lot 1542 was the first lot, so your current lot is the earliest I've ever heard of. A New York Microsoft Store should be moving a lot of Surface Books, so you should find them to be at Lot 1546 or greater. My Atlanta Store was at Lot 1546 when I got this one over two weeks ago.

Please try connecting an external hard disk or SSD and copy a large folder to it from the internal driver or a SD Card. (at least 10GB.
I would love to hear that you can do that without any hanging or errors, but I have seen enough people on the forum with problems in this area that I am extremely concerned.
How do you find the lot number? I just got mine last week and it was definitely not a returned item. i7, 16GB, 512GB.

The Lot number is on the back of the box in the middle of the sticker on the lower left that has the model number, etc.

I'm using my Seagate drive as my Windows 10 backup drive using Windows 10 backup.
There is only one folder on the drive named FileHistory.
The size of the FileHistory folder is 101GB
The actual size of the FileHistory folder is 109,294,227,456 bytes and it contains 32,693 files in 10,174 folders.
I've retrieved some individual JPG images from various places in the FileHistory folder and they are good.

Just for grins I started a backup to my WD hard drive. Then, while it was running, I switched to Outlook and was working on an important company email when the system locked up and I heard the telltale USB disconnect tones. Luckily, I figured out that I can disconnect the USB connector and reconnect and the system comes back, so I didn't lose anything, but....
I don't know what lot mine is. I bought the Book just before coming to my second home (I have a work office here and that is why I am using a powerful laptop, instead of a desktop system). Unfortunately, the box is in my main home, but my son-in-law will be shipping it to me, along with my Yoga, so I can return the Book.
Seeing that there are a number of others with the same problem as mine (search for "USB external" in this forum), I am quite sure it is not a one-off, but it could be batch related. In any case, I don't have time for all of the testing required to fix this. (Reminds me of all of the Vista problems that sent so many users packing off to Apple!).
By the way, in case you missed it in an earlier email, the WD drive and the SSD drive work flawlessly with the Yoga. I went to the Book mainly because I do a lot of photography work and though I could make use of the pen technology. Although I really like the concept of the Book, I am fine going back to the Yoga for now.
