USB3 Drive Base Disconnecting During Write Cycle

OK, this is an interesting problem.

So, I have an external SSD in a USB3 enclosure, and I've been moving my Steam Library onto it.

The SSD is a Samsung EVO 850, 500GB drive. I've tried two different enclosures, a Startech and an Orico. Both behave the same way.

The enclosure is hooked up through the keyboard base of the Surface Book via one of the USB3 ports.

The problem I'm encountering is when the drive is busy writing files the base seems to disconnect and the drive disappears. It eventually remounts, but of course the damage is done...

To test this issue, I ran Crystal Disk Mark 5 on the external drive, and the read cycle is fine. Once the write cycle begins, it seems to hang up and then suddenly the drive disconnects.

Anyone have any idea what might be going on here?

How were you able to return your Surface Book? Were you within the first 30 days?

I initiated the online return process on the last day of the 30 days window (Dec 24th).  I got the shipping labels at that time.  I already had a few problems (mDP to DVI not working on dock, Scaling issue after sleep, Connected Standby not working) so I had a feeling I would return it, something was not quite right, especially for the price paid...

I then contacted the hardware manufacturer of my ICYRaid device and contacted MS Support.  When it was clear that the SB was causing the issue and that MS Support could not help me (they were trying but had no solutions) I returned it.  I dropped it at the local UPS Store on Jan 8th, they got it the next Monday, Jan 11th.  My refund was processed in a couple of days and was refunded the total amount (almost $4500 CAD) on Jan 14th.

It's been a little over a week since my last post.  Has anyone tried this again lately?

I decided to try this again but with a Sabrent SATA to USB 3.0 hard drive enclosure (EC-UASP). I have 4 of these and two of them were going bad on the enclosure's controller and I was in the process debugging this so that I can submit an RMA to Sabrent.  With the two remaining working ones, I decided to just give this a try again and I was able to transfer 100GB from one enclosure to the other and it did not hiccup at all.  Which was a surprise to me.

    Here's what I tried:

    • One HDD was a 320GB Samsung spindle, the other was a 320GB Seagate spindle. Seagate to Samsung 100GB Transfer.
    • One Intel 240GB SSD, the other was the 320 Seagate. Seagate to Intel SSD 100GB Transfer.
    • One Intel 240GB SSD, the other also an Intel 250GB SSD.  Intel -> 100GB Transfer.

None of these were failing so I went back to my original setup that was failing, which was the two 2TB Western Digital Passport.  I didn't transfer 100GB of data but it was 47GB of data and it transferred successfully.

There were some updates from when I posted until now but I haven't been paying attention so I didn't catch what was updated. Have you guys recently and still running into issues?  I think mine may have been fixed?

On a side note... SSD external to SSD external transfer was flipping fast...holy ****.

I tried again on my WD Ultra, and still, it hangs. This drive works fine on all other windows 10 in my house, just not the book...

I just tried again and had another hang. When it hung the light on the drive flicked off for longer than its regular flashes and the keyboard and mouse were unresponsive.

I also tried just prior to this post to confirm.  Still DISAPPOINTED!!!! Still no resolution.  Still no acknowledgement from Suckysoft Still the most expensive brick attached to a display I've ever purchased!  I'm stuck with this lemon.  Using CrystalDisk will cause it to disconnect every time.  This unexpected disconnect can't be good for the longevity of the these devices either.
