USB3 Drive Base Disconnecting During Write Cycle

OK, this is an interesting problem.

So, I have an external SSD in a USB3 enclosure, and I've been moving my Steam Library onto it.

The SSD is a Samsung EVO 850, 500GB drive. I've tried two different enclosures, a Startech and an Orico. Both behave the same way.

The enclosure is hooked up through the keyboard base of the Surface Book via one of the USB3 ports.

The problem I'm encountering is when the drive is busy writing files the base seems to disconnect and the drive disappears. It eventually remounts, but of course the damage is done... 

To test this issue, I ran Crystal Disk Mark 5 on the external drive, and the read cycle is fine. Once the write cycle begins, it seems to hang up and then suddenly the drive disconnects.

Anyone have any idea what might be going on here?

    Same here.  Returned by SB because it was useless to me but now I cannot find a good alternative and I'm out of a great laptop!  

    Waiting for these issues to be fixed and I might buy one again...

    How were you able to return your Surface Book? Were you within the first 30 days?

    Same here.  Returned by SB because it was useless to me but now I cannot find a good alternative and I'm out of a great laptop!

    Glad to hear this. I will let Microsoft work on their updates for another month and then give the Book a try again.

    It's been a little over a week since my last post.  Has anyone tried this again lately?

    I decided to try this again but with a Sabrent SATA to USB 3.0 hard drive enclosure (EC-UASP). I have 4 of these and two of them were going bad on the enclosure's controller and I was in the process debugging this so that I can submit an RMA to Sabrent.  With the two remaining working ones, I decided to just give this a try again and I was able to transfer 100GB from one enclosure to the other and it did not hiccup at all.  Which was a surprise to me.

    Here's what I tried:

    • One HDD was a 320GB Samsung spindle, the other was a 320GB Seagate spindle. Seagate to Samsung 100GB Transfer.
    • One Intel 240GB SSD, the other was the 320 Seagate. Seagate to Intel SSD 100GB Transfer.
    • One Intel 240GB SSD, the other also an Intel 250GB SSD.  Intel -> 100GB Transfer.

    None of these were failing so I went back to my original setup that was failing, which was the two 2TB Western Digital Passport.  I didn't transfer 100GB of data but it was 47GB of data and it transferred successfully.

    There were some updates from when I posted until now but I haven't been paying attention so I didn't catch what was updated. Have you guys recently and still running into issues?  I think mine may have been fixed? 

    On a side note... SSD external to SSD external transfer was flipping fast...holy ****.

    Same here. I purchased a SurfaceBook, dock and that exact SSD based off that presentation. Now, a couple of thousand dollars later, I've got a laptop that corrupts data on my expensive SSD. I'd at least like some acknowledgement of the issue so I know if it will be fixed, otherwise I need to hold off selling my old MacBook
