Surface Dock keeps disconnecting/reconnecting USB devices with Surface Book 2

Well, actually I tried a different way still with the MS docking station connected, but with all my USB 3 devices connected to the laptop (Surface Book 2). The issue still happens. So it's related to the docking station. Since the laptop has a battery it's not a power disruption either. I think there is an hardware fault on the laptop itself. And since it doesn't seem to only affect SB2 but also Surface Pro, that's really a widely spread problem.

I FIXED MY PROBLEM FOR GOOD!! I REPLACED Surfacebook 2 WITH A Surfacebook 3. I know it is not the answer you wanted. As for so many of us, we can fix this computer problems, FORGET ABOUT IT!!!!! I was in a never ending loop. Countless hours, days of lost time. An experienced co-worker of mine (after I told him the countless failed attempts said) LET IT GO!!!! MOVE ON!!!! Its a problem that can't be fixed. It is apparently a bad Microsoft design flaw. There is some power flaw between the dock & just THIS Surfacebook 2. I have hook up three other Surfacebook 2 laptops to my work environment, No Problem. They work fine. My Surfacebook 2 is the same image as the others. STOP!!!! Do not try to reason beyond this point. We were dealt a lemon. Accept it!!!! Microsoft screwed up on this one. We all can't be incompetent. This post has been going on since Surfacebook 2 came out. LET IT GO!!!! MOVE ON!!!! I am still using the same dock, two monitors, keyboard & mouse. My setup hasn't changed. I can hook up two external HDs, charge a headset & iPad, all at the same time. Every now & then I get a power port warning. I know I am exceeding the expected power limits. I unplug a device & click/ok my warning (the way it is supposed to work). This was completely unthinkable with my old unit. I hope this gives you the same push that I needed. Find some way to warranty that $%#@&^!!!!!!

I bought my SB2 last year for $3k. Unless Microsoft is replacing it with an SB3 for free, I would never go back to MS laptops. 

Indeed what you're proposing is not a solution. And sounds like a MS speech. Won't work for me. 

This issue is also happening on surface pro device, so you're suggestion is to replace a $1000 device with a $3000 one. That won't fly for me.

Reinstalling Nvidia and Intel USB hub drivers did not solve the problem since they were already up to date for me. Simply reinstalling them made no difference. 

What made things a bit better for me is to go to Device Manager -> USB controllers and find all the "Generic USB Hub devices"

For each of those devices, you want to check and see that on their "Details" page they have the hardware ID as VID = 045E (Microsoft) and PID =0901, 0902, etc... to make sure they are one of the USB hub ports on the Surface Dock.

For each of these devices, I went to their Power Management tab and unchecked the box that says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

This seems to help because now I have fewer disconnections, but doesn't solve the problem entirely. I might have missed a root device or something else. 

The reason I'm looking in this area is because I noticed that the times when I'm seeing USB disconnecting seems to be when my Surface device is really stressed on performance, mostly when playing some games that has the CPU and GPU running near their limits, fan's going full blast and the computer's still getting warmer. It seems like when the system is thermal throttling, it decides to turn off power to the USB devices and disconnect your keyboard and mouse because as a side effect? What the hell. 

From this observation, I don't think spending money to buying a Surface Dock 2 would actually solve the problem if my suspicion is right -- this is a software configuration issue, not a hardware defect. Windows device drivers are being overly aggressive in trying to manage power and turned off devices that is detrimental to the user's experience. 

I advise everybody with this problem to experiment with the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power", particularly on the "Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible-Hostcontroller". I use a different dock (Dell USB-C display) and had very very similar problems and it was this setting that fixed it for me. Try that before you get new hardware.
