Surface Dock Firmware Updater won't install - Failed to install SurfaceBaseFwUpdateDriver.dll

Hi

I'm trying to install a firmware update for the Surface Dock I am using connected to my (first generation) Surface Book.

Primarily I'm trying to do this so I can charge my iPhone from the Surface Dock without having the connection repeatedly connect and drop.

I am running Windows 10 (Creator's edition, up to date as of 2nd Feb 2018) and trying to install:

Surface_Dock_Updater_v2.12.136.0.msi

During the installation process I get the following message.

Failed to install SurfaceBaseFwUpdateDriver.dll. Aborting installation.

Any ideas?

Regards

Jonathan

This version of the Surface Dock Firmware bricked my Dock.  It got hung up on 66% and stuck there for an hour, until I finally restarted my Surface Book and at that point it no longer was recognized.  I had to open a support ticket and send it in to get replaced.  Still waiting to get it back...

I have installed the dock firmware previously a handful of times without issue until this version.  I am holding off on updating my work dock until a newer version gets released.

Could you please provide your Surface Book's Windows version and OS build? Also, have tried connecting another smartphone to the Surface Dock, was the behavior the same?

We'll keep an eye on your reply.

    Thank you.

    • Is this the first you have encountered this issue?
      • I have tried to install the latest Firmware Update on at least two occasions
    • Have you tried to first check for and install the update using Windows update while Surface Dock is connected to your Surface Book?
      • Windows Update is completely up to date, and running Windows update whilst the Surface Dock is attached makes no difference.
    • Have you also tried re-downloading the Surface Dock Updater, then install it to your device?
      • I have tried the Surface Dock Updater

It may be that my Surface Dock is up to date. Non-trivial to tell.

However, the problem I am trying to solve is principally an attached iPhone gets connected and disconnected incessantly at ~30s intervals when connected to the Surface Dock, particularly if other items are also connected to the USB. This is extremely frustrating. I was hoping a firmware update might fix the problem.

Can you shed any light on this problem? It appears to be well recognised on the net.

    Jonathan

Was the Surface Book connected to the Surface Dock when you tried to install the program?
