There is no GPS on the Surface. It uses location services based on the internet connection.

Simple question, cannot find the answer. A couple of websites states that GPS is there, however I find nothing on www.surface.com. The website that state that GPS is there have said that since june and I don't know how they would know?

As it's a WiFi only device, there is no GPS, but it does have location services as part of the operating system.

Hi,
Surface for Windows RT does not support an external GPS device such as the one you refer to.
Surface for Windows RT can look up your location based on WiFi signals in your vicinity, as long as the Surface is also Internet-connected. Apps such as Maps or Weather, or web sites through Internet Explorer, can use this information.

Surface RT does not have GPS, however it does have Location Services which allows certain programs to know your location based on IP address.
Was there a specific app you needed to use with GPS?

2013-10-19T03:31:13+00:00 I'm not seeing any reference to a built in GPS in the specs. I've had iPhones and iPads for a few years now and without some form of GPS available they would have been much less useful. Location services via WiFi has very limited capability. An actual GPS is the best option if you will be away from WiFi and cell towers. So a built in GPS on the Surface tablets would be a great addition. There is probably many external GPS devices that attach via a USB port but I'd rather it be built into the tablet. I guess I'll wait for the Surface 3 or have a look at the other vendors. Is anyone aware of a low profile external GPS that won't easily be broken off the connection to the tablet?
