My Surface Studio 2 finally arrived today. The machine is a total beauty, I love it to pieces - fits my workflow perfectly. Only thing I really don't love is the fan noise. Even when just doing some file renaming or opening MS Word, the fans spin up to an extremely annoying level. I don't mind a low-level fan constantly going and I don't care if the fan speeds up when doing some heavy photo editing or gaming - but I'm talking blow-dryer here while the system is simply idling. According to task manager, the CPU is less than 3% busy here.
Can someone confirm this is normal? Should I RMA the machine?

Good to hear there are improvements. I'm guessing I've got a few issues with my machine. The GPU temp is 20° higher than yours and fans are ticking like mad.
Looks to be a 3 week turn around with MS again, which means I'm back to scrambling around to find a temporary replacement. Fingers crossed.

Yes, noticably quieter than before. Little sound from the fans with the numbers below.
The cores are hotter, though. (CPUs at 0-4%, average 49° | GPU 2% at 49° also).
Could be cooler, since they're doing nothing important, really, apart from displaying this website, obviously.
So there's definitely something wrong with your system.
I've had to lodge another warranty repair for my studio.
Last year, I had it for a few weeks before I contacted support to see what's going on. Loud fans, hot, etc. They ended up sending out a replacement. The replacement was only marginally quieter but it was better; it seems that this was just the norm.
This weekend I noticed that the noise on my fan has gotten much much worse. I'm now getting a pulsing whirring noise much worse than before. There's a definite rattle/vibration to it now. I tried to capture this on video below.

Cpu is 5% at 40C. Gpu is 2% at 58-62C.
I sent the above video to someone else who has the Studio 2 and their's sounded nothing like that when its under load, let alone idling.
Its shame but I have to send this back again. Hoping the next one is better. My main concern is that my warranty will expire by which time the deteriorating fans (or whatever is wrong) renders this thing useless.

Seems to reduce the noises coming from the fans dramatically, especially when the machine is on standby and the fans were running until you woke up the surface and then they stopped. Which was kind of annoying and very unnecessary. This issue seems to have been solved. Now it is as silent as it should be on standby.
Though the temperatures of the cores go up to 81° when visiting websites the fans keep a low noise, which is very good (for me, probably not for the CPU). But I am wondering why the cores become that hot whilst nor doing anything particularly exhausting.
I'll watch and report.
