GPU not detected in Surface Book 2

Hello MS support,

I bought surface book 2, 256 GB, NVIDIA GeForce 1050, 2GB model  in November, 2017 and it worked pretty well until recently. I don't know why it stopped detecting the GPU. It's not showing up in the display adapters. I tried detaching and attaching the screen it gets detected for a moment and goes off again. I tried one solution offered in the Microsoft page to uninstall the driver (checking the delete software ) and restart the PC but with no luck.

Is it a hardware problem or a frequent software problem ? I will be really glad if you can provide me a solution to this.

Thanks,

Rajeev

Hi Robert_at_lane,

I had the same problem as you the last days and I also tried the different solutions posted here in the community I nearly gave up but today I tried it the last time on a different way and it seems like it is working now. Graphics card is still there and isn't switching off anymore even if I use programs which need a lot of performance, also waking up is working super fast again without any problem and the power button is working as well. (I guess there is some issue with the power management because when my power supply was plugged in the power button and the startup worked, unplugged I could press what I wanted, only the detach button was waking up the device and the Nvidia cards always disappeared after a short time except when I was using Rhino3D plugged in with best performance)

Maybe my solution helps you as well....

  1. Make sure that all windows updates are made and the latest firmware is installed, also the latest Nvidia driver (397.64)
  2. Put the power settings to best performance (plugged in and in battery mode)
  3. Open the device manager and keep it open
  4. Unplug your SB2
  5. Detach the tablet and wait for ~10-15sec until the system updated the connected devices (the device manager should flicker once or twice until it stops, maybe there is a sound as well)
  6. Reattach and wait until the Nvidia card pops up in the device manager
  7. Quickly make a normal shutdown as long as the card is still visible in the device manager
  8. When the device is off, do a hard reset by pressing the volume up button and the power button for at least 20 seconds (Press and hold the volume up button before pressing and holding the power button)
  9. The UEFI interface might appear, just exit and let the system restart.

These steps seemed to work in my case...I hope they help you as well...if there are any changes during the further use of my SB2 I will inform you.

Best regards.

    A month ago I bought the Surface Book 2 of 15 ".

Everything was going very well until two weeks ago. Playing normal games suddenly these were closed and I could not open them again. Looking at the device manager, I realized that the NVIDIA GeForce graphics card had disappeared.

I looked in forums and tried all the steps I found. Here is a list:

-rebooting / re-docking the clipboard multiple times

    -sfc / scannow

    -hard reset

    -factory reset

-system image restore from a point before the issue

-windows update (does not detect any new drivers)

-Downloaded nvidia's drivers (Does not detect compatible hardware and installation fails), but the last update remains

-Trying to enable the graphics card via the UEFI settings (but the UEFI Surface is limited and does not have that option)

-Enabling hidden devices to be shown in device manager via cmd / looking for generic display drivers that could be the nvidia card (only shows integrated graphics)

-Update windows 10 (I have the latest update)

    -Make the BIOS page appear

    • Uninstalling the NVIDIA card

None of these steps helped permanently. Whenever you open any program that needs NVIDIA to work, it will disappear again

I contacted Micorosoft to help me and they repeated the same procedures that I did. I have read that to many people, this problem was solved with an update in September, which I have already installed and therefore I do not understand why this problem continues to hepen in my surface.

    Can anybody help me

I had a ton of trouble this week as well.

Doing a hard reset with the tablet off worked sometimes. But what solved it for me this week was actually updating the Intel Display Driver.

My clue that my GTX 1050 is missing is my dock 4K display-port monitor drops to 30hz.

I had latest NVIDIA drivers 417.01 through GeForce Experience.

I also had the lasted SB2 firmware (SurfaceBook2_Win10_17134_1802209_1)

I noticed in Device Manager the Intel 620 driver was 22.20.16. I updated to 25.20.100.6373 and not only did my GTX 1050 begin to work - but so did my Windows Hello camera, which had stopped working a month prior.

A few reboots later though I see that the Intel driver has downgraded to 22.20.16 on its own... I'm not sure why that is.

In the NVIDIA control panel I still cannot change the PhysX config from the Intel to the GTX1050.

    Those are my remaining issues.

If your laptop was new (Nov - Dec 2018) how would you get back to this update?

Also, does this error you talk of stop you from using the GPU?

It would be a monumental help if you replied!

    Thanks!
