GPU not detected in Surface Book 2

Hello MS support,

I bought surface book 2, 256 GB, NVIDIA GeForce 1050, 2GB model  in November, 2017 and it worked pretty well until recently. I don't know why it stopped detecting the GPU. It's not showing up in the display adapters. I tried detaching and attaching the screen it gets detected for a moment and goes off again. I tried one solution offered in the Microsoft page to uninstall the driver (checking the delete software ) and restart the PC but with no luck.

Is it a hardware problem or a frequent software problem ? I will be really glad if you can provide me a solution to this.

Thanks,

Rajeev

Hi Robert_at_lane,

I had the same problem as you the last days and I also tried the different solutions posted here in the community I nearly gave up but today I tried it the last time on a different way and it seems like it is working now. Graphics card is still there and isn't switching off anymore even if I use programs which need a lot of performance, also waking up is working super fast again without any problem and the power button is working as well. (I guess there is some issue with the power management because when my power supply was plugged in the power button and the startup worked, unplugged I could press what I wanted, only the detach button was waking up the device and the Nvidia cards always disappeared after a short time except when I was using Rhino3D plugged in with best performance)

Maybe my solution helps you as well....

  1. Make sure that all windows updates are made and the latest firmware is installed, also the latest Nvidia driver (397.64)
  2. Put the power settings to best performance (plugged in and in battery mode)
  3. Open the device manager and keep it open
  4. Unplug your SB2
  5. Detach the tablet and wait for ~10-15sec until the system updated the connected devices (the device manager should flicker once or twice until it stops, maybe there is a sound as well)
  6. Reattach and wait until the Nvidia card pops up in the device manager
  7. Quickly make a normal shutdown as long as the card is still visible in the device manager
  8. When the device is off, do a hard reset by pressing the volume up button and the power button for at least 20 seconds (Press and hold the volume up button before pressing and holding the power button)
  9. The UEFI interface might appear, just exit and let the system restart.

These steps seemed to work in my case...I hope they help you as well...if there are any changes during the further use of my SB2 I will inform you.

Best regards.

Thanks for the reply but I’ve gone through a total re-install (I think its called a refresh) of my Surface Book with no updates.  I tested it with no software installed first and found that the machine would not start straight away (it took multiple presses of the power button for windows to start up), then the screen wouldn’t detach.  Once I got the screen to detach and re-attach the GPU Would appear in the Device manager and then disappear a minute later.  I believe in my case that there is a hardware problem.

I had the same problem on my first one and I sent it back and got a replacement and it was fine from January until last week and it happened again.  I worked with MS support but they really couldn't help but they did offer to replace it but I would rather try to fix mine that get a refurbished unit back so...I did a clean install of windows 10- 3 TIMES and then I read a thread about taking it off the clipboard and putting it back on again.  That worked but the GTX1060 was still showing only as invisible but somewhere after a couple times of turning it off and taking clipboard on and off it worked and seems ok for now.  The support guy I talked to told me that Microsoft is aware of it and is working on a fix for this issue and said something about the first few weeks of May that update would be available.  I also did the firmware updates and all updates and it didn't do a thing until I did what I just explained above.  I don't want to tell you to reinstall the OS if its not something you are comfortable with either...just saying what I did.  I spent probably 8-10 hours working on it to get it to work and lost a whole day of productivity because of it.

    Good luck!

please refer to Issue number 1425228103 which was created yesterday with Microsoft Support. It is clear that the GPU problem is recreated by the 1803 Windows update. My new Surface Book 2 was fine until the recent update. Now it exhibits the same old problem as the Book 2 it replaced.

I then went and checked my wife's Surface Book which did not have the problem before the 1803 update and it now does. We also noted that even when the Device Manager shows the  1060 driver, the Nvidia driver update installer cannot find it. There is no question that the 1803 update is the culprit.
