GPU not detected in Surface Book 2

Hello MS support,

I bought surface book 2, 256 GB, NVIDIA GeForce 1050, 2GB model  in November, 2017 and it worked pretty well until recently. I don't know why it stopped detecting the GPU. It's not showing up in the display adapters. I tried detaching and attaching the screen it gets detected for a moment and goes off again. I tried one solution offered in the Microsoft page to uninstall the driver (checking the delete software ) and restart the PC but with no luck.

Is it a hardware problem or a frequent software problem ? I will be really glad if you can provide me a solution to this.

Thanks,

Rajeev

Hi Robert_at_lane,

I had the same problem as you the last days and I also tried the different solutions posted here in the community I nearly gave up but today I tried it the last time on a different way and it seems like it is working now. Graphics card is still there and isn't switching off anymore even if I use programs which need a lot of performance, also waking up is working super fast again without any problem and the power button is working as well. (I guess there is some issue with the power management because when my power supply was plugged in the power button and the startup worked, unplugged I could press what I wanted, only the detach button was waking up the device and the Nvidia cards always disappeared after a short time except when I was using Rhino3D plugged in with best performance)

Maybe my solution helps you as well....

  1. Make sure that all windows updates are made and the latest firmware is installed, also the latest Nvidia driver (397.64)
  2. Put the power settings to best performance (plugged in and in battery mode)
  3. Open the device manager and keep it open
  4. Unplug your SB2
  5. Detach the tablet and wait for ~10-15sec until the system updated the connected devices (the device manager should flicker once or twice until it stops, maybe there is a sound as well)
  6. Reattach and wait until the Nvidia card pops up in the device manager
  7. Quickly make a normal shutdown as long as the card is still visible in the device manager
  8. When the device is off, do a hard reset by pressing the volume up button and the power button for at least 20 seconds (Press and hold the volume up button before pressing and holding the power button)
  9. The UEFI interface might appear, just exit and let the system restart.

These steps seemed to work in my case...I hope they help you as well...if there are any changes during the further use of my SB2 I will inform you.

Best regards.

I did that all before it worked for about 4 months back then it came again today.  I posted that solution originally.  I was one of the first to figure it out.

Its only a matter of time till it comes back for you.  Thats why i am so pissed now!

Guess what the Hard Reset with the that clears the display settings is not a solution either.  It just happened to me again today.  I had to remove the tablet from the keyboard and then re-attach it.  It seemed to clear the issue but like before that never worked.  I could do the hard reset again but this now is an issue beyond a simple fix.  There needs to be an official statement and fix on this now!  Its been over 6 months and now its happening again.  Microsoft you are going to get sued.  This is getting beyond a recall of some sort or serious software fix.  I am not going to wait till my warranty is up and then start paying for fixes to a known issue.  I will sue you way before that happens and I am sure by this thread I will have no problem getting people to join my law suit.  Better get your house in order because the poop is about to hit the fan real soon on this issue.  Its time to take this very seriously.  FYI you almost had an Apple customer but now lost me again for several years to come if this is not taken a lot more seriously.  GET YOUR DAMN HOUSE IN ORDER!!!!!  CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW!

    Hi Brandon,

I'm not sure what procedure you are following when you say you did a "Hard Reset".  However, the following procedure worked for me and for others on this forum:

    1. Do a shutdown and then unplug the power cord.
    2. Do a hard reset (i.e. restart) by pressing down both the volume up button and the power button down for 30 seconds (more than 20 may work, but I held them both down for 30).  (Hint: Press and hold the volume up button down before pressing down and holding the power button.)
    3. When the UEFI interface is displayed, just exit and let the system restart.

As someone pointed out, this procedure should really be called a "hard restart."

What version of windows are you running?

I initially fixed the problem on my surface book using the hard restart while on build 1709.  I'm now on build 1803 and don't have any problems.   In fact, I saw some reports in a couple of technical news articles that say Microsoft has fixed the problem as of build 1803.

If you have tried the hard restart described above, can you try it again just in case you missed a step?

Please let us know whether this works.

I've been asked to fill out a survey for Microsoft support.  It would help to know whether you were able to fix the problem by using the above procedure.  If I get a chance, I will convey your frustration with support.
