GPU not detected in Surface Book 2

Hello MS support,

I bought surface book 2, 256 GB, NVIDIA GeForce 1050, 2GB model  in November, 2017 and it worked pretty well until recently. I don't know why it stopped detecting the GPU. It's not showing up in the display adapters. I tried detaching and attaching the screen it gets detected for a moment and goes off again. I tried one solution offered in the Microsoft page to uninstall the driver (checking the delete software ) and restart the PC but with no luck.

Is it a hardware problem or a frequent software problem ? I will be really glad if you can provide me a solution to this.

Thanks,

Rajeev

Hi Robert_at_lane,

I had the same problem as you the last days and I also tried the different solutions posted here in the community I nearly gave up but today I tried it the last time on a different way and it seems like it is working now. Graphics card is still there and isn't switching off anymore even if I use programs which need a lot of performance, also waking up is working super fast again without any problem and the power button is working as well. (I guess there is some issue with the power management because when my power supply was plugged in the power button and the startup worked, unplugged I could press what I wanted, only the detach button was waking up the device and the Nvidia cards always disappeared after a short time except when I was using Rhino3D plugged in with best performance)

Maybe my solution helps you as well....

  1. Make sure that all windows updates are made and the latest firmware is installed, also the latest Nvidia driver (397.64)
  2. Put the power settings to best performance (plugged in and in battery mode)
  3. Open the device manager and keep it open
  4. Unplug your SB2
  5. Detach the tablet and wait for ~10-15sec until the system updated the connected devices (the device manager should flicker once or twice until it stops, maybe there is a sound as well)
  6. Reattach and wait until the Nvidia card pops up in the device manager
  7. Quickly make a normal shutdown as long as the card is still visible in the device manager
  8. When the device is off, do a hard reset by pressing the volume up button and the power button for at least 20 seconds (Press and hold the volume up button before pressing and holding the power button)
  9. The UEFI interface might appear, just exit and let the system restart.

These steps seemed to work in my case...I hope they help you as well...if there are any changes during the further use of my SB2 I will inform you.

Best regards.

What brand of monitor are you using? I run a couple of ViewSonic VG2239m's and they've been pretty solid after the updates. If you have access to another brand/model of monitor it may be worth giving a shot to see if the problem still persists or not.

Update: One issue persists with the ViewSonics even after the Aug 1 updates - Upon waking the screens, one of the monitors will wake in 640x480 resolution and can not be changed back to the proper 1920x1080 in display settings. The solution is to power cycle the offending screen. This causes open windows to be moved from that screen to the Surface Book screen which is set as screen #1. This happens once every few days.

It's pretty annoying moving your windows back to the place you desire them to be after power cycling a screen, but it doesn't happen too often and there are no other perceptible adverse effects.

Power settings when plugged in are:

         1. screen sleeps after 30 minutes

         2. PC never sleeps

         3. Screen saver: none

         4. Connected to monitors via mini-DisplayPort to full size DisplayPort cables

         5. Surface Book screen #1 in center with the ViewSonics flanking each side(left #3, right #2)

         6. Hmmm...??? - Just noticed power mode was set to "Best Battery Life" for some reason (not by my desire...) Changed to "Best Performance" to            see what happens. I'll update again if this resolves my issue.

I didn't state my comment very well. I don't think there is anything wrong with your monitor per se.

Instead, I'm suggesting that the Surface Dock may be a picky eater. It may interact with a different monitor better or worse than the one you are currently using. I've found that different brands of monitors wake/refresh/sleep/etc. differently.

Trying a different monitor might not be feasible, but if you can and it works better for you then at least you can point to an incompatibility issue that needs to be investigated.

Monitors can definitely be incompatible when connected to the Surface Dock.  Currently I am using a pair of Samsung U28H75x monitors connected to a Surface Dock and Surface Book 2 (15 inch).  Earlier this year I was using a pair of Samsung PX2370 monitors on the same Surface Dock unit and a Surface Book 1.  For both configurations the monitors do not display properly when either SB powers up. The display is a group of vertical multi-colored bars.  The monitor cables are connected to HDMI port 1 on the monitors.

The fix:  Before powering the laptop, use the monitor configuration button and set the monitors to scan on HDMI port 2.  Then power the laptop.  After logging onto the laptop use the monitor configuration button to set the monitor to scan on HDMI port 1.  They work well after that, though occasionally one or the other wigs out and starts flickering for a few seconds and then settles down.  Sometimes one or both of the monitors just go dark after the system has been on for a few hours.  My power settings on both the laptops and monitors is to NOT enter a screen save mode.  It appears either the graphics card or Surface Dock is having issues.

I recently upgrade the Surface Dock firmware as described elsewhere in this discussion.  And the 8/1/2018 Windows Updates are in place on the Surface Book 2.  No Joy.  Still the same issue with the Samsung monitors.

The Samsung monitor issue has been present for over two years.  Lots of discussion and frustration in the Samsung monitor community as neither Samsung or Microsoft have dealt with it.

Was it set to 8bit before the update? And it changed after the update?

Please reply if the rollback driver solved the issue.

Yes, it was set to 8bit before and changed to 6bit after the update.

The only thing I did was update the Surface Dock firmware but this didn't solve the problem.

I didn't actually get to try a rollback of the driver but a couple of days later it reverted to 8bit for no apparent reason.

Thanks for your advice sir. I did all things as you mention but the problem still exist. So today, I decisions to reset my surface book 2 into factory status. Its works! Both GPU come to work simultaneously and share their load properly. And my flight simulator program can run on the G force and intel at the same time. However, very small front and unappropriated display on some 3rd party programs still occurs these may due to the high resolution of the surface and its screen ratio enhanced property. I will look forward to see this solution from Microsoft.

    Thana
