I purchased two new surface dock2 to connect our surface pro 7 to our widescreen monitors using usb-c cables. Neither of the monitors would connect through the usb-c ports.
One monitor is an LG 38WK95C. The other is a Dell ultrasharp U3818DW. The LG monitor previously worked connecting to a macbook pro through the usb-c port.
To be clear, I first connected the surface dock 2 to one of the surface pro 7 devices and connected the Dell to the surface dock 2 through the usb-c. A messages was displayed to the effect that the monitor should be connected through a displayport. The monitor never showed up in windows, although you would get the sound like a monitor was recognized and the displayport message. Using the "detect monitor" feature came back with "no monitor detected".
I then connected the LG to the other surface pro 7 device through the surface dock 2. The exact same behavior occurred.
Windows update showed no updates available. I then manually updated the firmware on one of the surface pro 7 devices. Still no joy.

I have a surface book 3 with a Dell U2717Dt monitor. I used a USB-C to DP cable to connect the dock to the monitor. What I found and this is repeatable, that if I face the dock to computer cable towards the back the monitor is not recognized. If I face the cable towards the front it works. Kind of a pain because the cable has to loop back around and that puts tension on the connection, but it works.
Yeah, I've tried that. Nothing seems to work. I bought a second Dock 2 around the holidays for a second location and it works fine. (Different monitor and USB-C to USB-C). But the one at this location just won't get the second screen to open. I have a Book 3 with a Samsung C32F and am using USB-C to HDMI. I have tried literally everything! The only thing I can get to work (and this should be a hint to MSFT as to what is causing the problem so they can do a firmware update) is to pull up the Display Settings and change the Refresh Rate. I change from 60 to 59.5 or back from 59.5 to 60. This works EVERY time, but it's a pain. If the computer goes to sleep when I walk away (Dynamic Lock) it will wake up. If it actually goes to sleep... it's back to the Display Settings>Change Refresh Rate. One thing to keep in mind. Sometimes the Setting window opens in the screen that won't wake up... so I have to use the WINDOW+LEFT ARROW to get the window to show up on the Book 3 screen.
Like I said, my Dock 2 purchased in November works great (I have not tried it on this set up), but the one I bought in September doesn't work on this set up.
It is ridiculous that the dock does not recognise certain monitors.
I am having the same issue with a Dell 27 usbc monitor.
Works with the surface book but not the dock.
Epic fail and hopefully not hardware issue.
I had a Surface 6 with a Dock 1 and I upgraded to a Surface 7 with a Dock 2 only because I wanted the USB C and the Dock 2 works worse than the Dock 1! What a waste of money! Microsoft needs to resolve this issue with a firmware upgrade ASAP, waiting 2 months with no reply yet.
Unfortunately, the exchange of the cables and the use of the following cables (Amazon.com: USB C to DisplayPort Cable for Home Office (4K @ 60Hz, 2K @ 165Hz), uni Sturdy Aluminum DisplayPort to USB C Cable [Thunderbolt 3 Compatible] for MacBook Pro , MacBook Air / iPad Pro 2020/2018, XPS 15/13: Computers & Accessories) not successful. The connection of my smallest Surface (Surface 4) is successful. The monitors and the docking station work. The connection of my great Surface pro 7 causes the monitors to go into standby and I can't find a way to change that. Switching the display rate from 59 to 60 hearts doesn't work for me either. It is clearly a problem with Surface Pro 7 ... I pay more than 2000 euros to become a beta tester ...
