Surface dock 2 not connecting to monitors using usb-c cables

I purchased two new surface dock2 to connect our surface pro 7 to our widescreen monitors using usb-c cables. Neither of the monitors would connect through the usb-c ports.

One monitor is an LG 38WK95C. The other is a Dell ultrasharp U3818DW. The LG monitor previously worked connecting to a macbook pro through the usb-c port.

To be clear, I first connected the surface dock 2 to one of the surface pro 7 devices and connected the Dell to the surface dock 2 through the usb-c. A messages was displayed to the effect that the monitor should be connected through a displayport. The monitor never showed up in windows, although you would get the sound like a monitor was recognized and the displayport message. Using the "detect monitor" feature came back with "no monitor detected".

I then connected the LG to the other surface pro 7 device through the surface dock 2. The exact same behavior occurred.

Windows update showed no updates available. I then manually updated the firmware on one of the surface pro 7 devices. Still no joy.

    Thank you all for your replies,  I have the exact same issue,  I do have a Surface Pro 7+, not sure if it makes a difference, 

    The USB-C to Display Port works fine connected directly in the tablet, but doesn't work connected in the Surface Dock 2.    I read the entire post and tried all the stuff here but nothing worked (with the one cable I have). I have a Dell S2721Ds monitor connected with StartTech USB C to Display Port.  I only have one monitor.   

    I am just adding my voice to this list,

    Exactly the same issue

    Surface Dock 2 Version with display ports - works perfectly across 4 Surface platforms.

    New Surface Dock 2 Version with USB-C Ports - All sorts of issues with all 4 Surface platforms

    What on earth are they talking about - firmware updates blah blah blah. This is a £200 piece of kit,

    Needs to work seamlessly.

    I was much happier with the doc 1 and had no problem with 2 monitors.  One was a DP and one was a HDMI to DP adapter.  I got the Surface Pro 7 solely for the USB C and to not be able to use it is beyond frustrating.  I wish I never got the Doc 2 as it worked perfectly, I should have simply found a USB C adapter somewhere.  I hope they release a fix because not being able to run 2 perfectly good brand new USB C monitors is pointless and frustrating

    It still continues to be a pain when we are in May 2021 ( your post of Nov 20). I wish I had read these issues before buying Dock 2. No matter what tips and tricks available on the web search, I haven’t been able to get external monitors work with Dock 2. 

    Same monitors work absolutely fine with dock 1 DisplayPort to mini display port but not with USB c to DisplayPort.

    7th May 2021... 
    Would have recommended my company not to touch microsoft surface pro & it's docking station as a supplier of choice. Will definitely recommend a change going forward.

    Wasted  productivity each day is anywhere between 10 minutes to 2 hours just trying to get it to connect to external monitors. This has been going on for two weeks. 

    On reconnect/re-open after disconnect or shutdown issue rearises. Wasted time. 

    Tried:
    * Updating registry as recommended online.

    * Drivers for benq monitors installed

    * Power source off for monitors/unplug replug microsoft docking, unplug replug external monitors... the whole lot.

    Sometimes it recognises 1, sometimes it recognises none... definitely not a suggested corporate product. Okay as a stand alone laptop... but definitely not a good laptop when you want to dock and connect external displays.
