Word 2016 always open in Side to Side view, even after changing it to Vertical view.

Recently, my Word 2016 had defaulted to scrolling between document pages side-to-side rather than vertically. I keep changing (under the View tab) the "page movement" to vertical, but each time I re-open Word, it defaults to side-to-side (see picture).

I don't understand why the sudden change, nor why Word won't "save" the last setting I have it on. Is there anyway to change the default to vertical and keep it that way?

I had the same problem. You just need to add the key.

Exit out of Word.

In Regedit, find 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word'

Add the key 'Last View', then in there add a D-Word 'WordViewStateUsePageStackArrangement', leave the value as the default (zero).

Restart Word.

Worked for me.

    I didnt install any programs or something of the sort.

    Regarding Windows and Office, I'm not sure. I dont remember exactly when it happened and I didn'y pay too much attention at the time.

    However, I am pretty sure that Windows did update itself around that time

    Nope! Word itself still is defaulting to horizontal viewing. Moreover, saving the zoom setting misses the point (and, therefore, isn't a real solution).

    I'm somewhat adjusted to this issue on my Surface Studio...by using my Surface Pro 4 which doesn't exhibit the same behavior. lol.

    OK, wow, that seems remarkably indifferent to the issue on the part of Microsoft...but perhaps they don't consider this "feature" as an issue...?

    I have been having that problem for months.  Excel also has a significant bug with the Surface Studio.  It is a bit shocking the Microsoft's premier hardware won't run it own office software properly.

    I've had this "open in horizontal view" problem ever since I got my Surface Studio. It's a several-times-a-day issue while I'm writing books. It seems nearly unthinkable to me that Microsoft has let this problem linger for so long on premier hardware.
