I've seen many post, but no answers? Surface Pro Classic and just bought a Power Cover. Power Cover is recognized as both a keyboard and a battery under devises. All firmware ever pushed is there and updated. Battery #1 and Battery #2 show in the battery menu...but not charging or maybe 100% charged is completely depleted.
Once the internal battery reaches 80% (or so) the Power Cover charge goes from 0% to 100% and not charging. Once the internal battery is depleted, the Surface shuts off and the Power Cover sits there happily doing nothing to help.
Has Microsoft just ignored the many people that this problem has occurred to, or is there not a fix. I'm trying to hold out till the Surface Go, but this battery thing is annoying to deal with.
Please don't add the gif. of how the batteries charge or how the blue fills the keyboard and monitor, please please don't answer with that.

Thanks very much Pete. After waiting about 2 months for mine to charge spontaneously, I finally opened up the unit, used a 5v 1a charger for 5 sec on each battery (still connected within the unit). Worked like a charm. It is now charging for the first time in its life -- up to 4% after ~10 mins. Again, THANK YOU for a genuine solution for my formerly depleted NOS keyboard.
Update: The unit fully charged that same day and functions now as it was originally intended.
Fantastic and relatively easy mod. Just did the same
I used a typical 5V 500mA power supply from my mp3 to wake the cells. I attached the voltage to each cell without detaching the cells. 5 seconds of voltage attachment rose the voltage of each cell from 1.72V to 2.9V. Now it charges like charm. I covered the back with a precision cut piece of thin black pvc and it is even better than new. Now I have more than 10+ hours of battery life in w10 pro2. Before going to surgery I tried everything but nothing worked.

Come on don't bring up the name of that crap. surface is full windows powered tablet and ipad is running on Apple over priced crap os. my 2013 surface pro can still beat any apple tablet and it's not comparable to any non windows tablet. these surface power covers were produced in 2014 and due to the hefty price tag of 300 dollars it was left in Microsoft warehouses. and now it's sold for 30 bucks on amazon and I think people should avoid buying that. it's been drained fully to 0 and it requires some sort of jump start that our friend already told us how to do. I'm not Microsoft fan and they are to blame for not fixing these batteries before selling out. goodluck on your surface power cover. I'm still hoping it will come back alive one day before the surgery date.
I wouldn't count on it. I sent mine in under warranty and still waiting. Over a month ago.
I'm headed to Perth at the beginning of January from the US and I have the same problem with a Power Cover that I just purchased from Amazon. Reading the experiences above, I'm not optimistic about returning it and getting a new one. I hope I can get it fixed before flying there because I could really use the extra battery on the 24+ hour flight, but I'm not sure I will be able to, so I'd be more than happy to have you attempt surgery while I'm there for three weeks.
