WiFi deteriorates after closing the lid on Surface Book connected to Surface Dock

If I close the lid of my Surface Book while connected to a Surface Dock, WiFi speed will drop from 54 Mbps to as low as 1 Mpbs.  The WiFi router is an AT&T U-Verse Pace 3801 HGV and the power setting for close the lid while plugged in is Do Nothing.  I am taking this thing back to the store for a refund if it can't be fixed.

    Not sure exactly what you mean - when you attach the new USB adapter, it shows up as a new Wi-Fi entry.  The biggest pain that took a while to figure out was that I had to remove my home access point from the "known networks" of the built-in adapter and then re-add to the external.  Before that, it would refuse to connect on the external without any reason why.  

    I'm currently using this adapter - you can find it on sale for ~$65:

    Also tried this adapter and it worked well.  I returned it when I saw the d-link on sale.  The other issue with this one is it doesn't support DFS channels which I use in my network:

    ok, to get around this proble of when the lid shuts the wifi iis killed, we brought two adapters:

    Dlink DWA 192 AC1900, 600mbs 2.4ghz, 1300 5ghz

    Dlink  171 150mbs 2.4ghz, 433 5ghz

    now, on speed test our ADSL wiifi comes in at 9mbs download 1mbs upload, if we went fibre in a few weeks i belive we could realize up to 52mbs, so if the DWA171 gets 150mbs/433mbs what id the point of us keeping the DWA192? is it range, speed of processor.

    we tried a AD1200 and that ran at 9/1 too and a AC300, that got 9/1

    If all you need is 9/1 then you're fine with the slower speed adapter.  I have a NAS at home that I use for streaming and transferring large files so I went with the faster adapter.  Keep in mind advertised speeds don't necessarily have any relation on the real world.  For me with an AC1300 5Ghz connection I average about 40MB/sec or 400mbit (far below the suggested max speeds).

    in my area BT say broadband 17mbs, Infinity upto 76mmbs.

    Curently running BT Hub 6, if I went to a Dlink wireless router AC1900, would the 9 download 1 upload figures increase? i.e would the Dlink router be better than the Home hub 6

    help appreciated

    Doesn't change the fact that Microsoft made a design mistake by placing the WiFi antenna forward at the top of the screen.
