Surface Pro 3 dock not detecting external monitor

I have a new surface pro 3 and I purchased two docking stations. 1 for the office and one for home. Neither docking stations allows the pro3 to detect a monitor that is plugged into it.   I can plug the monitor directly into the pro3 and it detects if fine both at home and at the office.   I can tell you that its a serious interruption professionally, and personally and does not bode well for MS's desires to serve the business community.   What I need is a solution.

I had exact same issue and I did this and the issue magically solved!!

a two button restart:

  • Power off the Surface Pro
  • Hold Volume Up and the Power button for 10 seconds
  • Release buttons
  • Wait 5-10 seconds
  • Power on the Surface

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Community! Sorry to know that your Docking Stations are not detecting your external displays. I can certainly understand why this is an inconvenience, especially when, as you mention, it is used in a business environment and for professional purposes. I’d like to help and hopefully provide the best possible solution!

Please try the following:

  • With the Surface and external display connected to the Docking Station, unplug the Docking Station from the power outlet, leave it unplugged for 30 seconds to a minute, then plug it back and see if the displays are recognized.
  • Please make sure all and latest Windows updates are installed. If so, verify all updates were taken while the Docking Station was connected to the Surface.
  • When you connect the external monitor, do you have any other devices connected to the Docking Station as well? And if so, have you tried removing all devices and connecting the external monitor only?
  • Have you tried connecting other external displays to the docking Station? Are ALL displays or devices not recognized?
  • Have you tried the what Ed Bott - MVP suggests?

    My Pro3 would not recognise monitors or charge on the docking station when I first purchased them in September 2014.  These issues were rectified with multiple firmware updates.

    Two days ago, my Pro 3 would not connect to the monitor via the docking station but would recognise the monitor if connected directly to the Pro3.

    All other docking station functionality is working fine. 

    I have spent too much time on this thing. I don't fancy another hour on the phone to support. What is wrong with it?

    Since posting, the monitor mysteriously starting working withour any intervention. One month later,  the PC suddenly inverted the orientation of both screens which could not be reversed without restarting. Once restarted, the Pro3 would not recognise the monitor through the docking station.

    no wonder people buy Apple stuff....

    I have had the same issue since purchasing my Surface Pro 3 and dock.  Out of the box my Acer TL232 monitor (also brand new) did not work when plugged into the dock with the mini DV adapter (says "no signal").  It always works when plugged directly into the Surface Pro 3 mini display port.  After seeing all the hijinks that everyone has had to go to through to try and get this to work - and seeing few that claim success after having bought multiple new cables, had hardware/firmware/drivers, etc. replaced

    • I am at loss to understand why Microsoft does not come to the rescue with a working solution.  Most people don't have the technical expertise to incorporate most of these solutions on their own. Microsoft - please step up and address this issue!  The Surface Pro 3 is one of the most expensive hybrids out there right now.  You'd think it would work!

    (If it makes a difference, though seems like this issue is across the board with all models - I have the i7 processor, 500GB SSD).

    Hi guys!!! Read me it is very important!!

    I've gone through all the same issues, installed and reinstalled all the system, firmwares, updates, and always with the same reullt: no screen when plugged  in the dock.

    Some guys said it worked for them to just change the MDP adaptor to another.

    Here is WHY: it is the simplest thing in the world. Most adapters PLASTIC need to be 'shaved' in order to fit correctly into the dock interface!!!

    It is so stupid. Just shave/cut a little bit the plastic so the plug gets correctly into the dock hole, and that's it. You will get INSTANT SOLUTION. No drivers no firmwares needed. Any display that works directly into the SP3, works exactly the same in the dock!!! The only difference is that directly into the surface there is no hole to fit it into!!!

    thaty is WHY the display seems to receive SOME power, but not all needed. MOst wires do NOT FIT in the hole unless they are a little bit 'shaved'.
