Surface Pro 3 dock not detecting external monitor

I have a new surface pro 3 and I purchased two docking stations. 1 for the office and one for home. Neither docking stations allows the pro3 to detect a monitor that is plugged into it.   I can plug the monitor directly into the pro3 and it detects if fine both at home and at the office.   I can tell you that its a serious interruption professionally, and personally and does not bode well for MS's desires to serve the business community.   What I need is a solution.

I had exact same issue and I did this and the issue magically solved!!

a two button restart:

  • Power off the Surface Pro
  • Hold Volume Up and the Power button for 10 seconds
  • Release buttons
  • Wait 5-10 seconds
  • Power on the Surface

Hi will-eman,

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Community! Sorry to know that your Docking Stations are not detecting your external displays. I can certainly understand why this is an inconvenience, especially when, as you mention, it is used in a business environment and for professional purposes. I’d like to help and hopefully provide the best possible solution!

Please try the following:

  • With the Surface and external display connected to the Docking Station, unplug the Docking Station from the power outlet, leave it unplugged for 30 seconds to a minute, then plug it back and see if the displays are recognized.
  • Please make sure all and latest Windows updates are installed. If so, verify all updates were taken while the Docking Station was connected to the Surface.
  • When you connect the external monitor, do you have any other devices connected to the Docking Station as well? And if so, have you tried removing all devices and connecting the external monitor only?
  • Have you tried connecting other external displays to the docking Station? Are ALL displays or devices not recognized?
  • Have you tried the what Ed Bott - MVP suggests?

Additionally, please read the following support article:

We hope this information works! Please keep us posted!

We are always here to help!

Best Wishes,

I called into Microsoft support and finally got it working.  The problem for me was the firmware update available via Windows Update had not installed.  You can check this on yours by going to the Device Manager and seeing if there are yellow exclamation points under Firmware.

With many tries to get it installed, we finally had to manually install each driver update that's part of the firmware.  This can be downloaded here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=38826

    Select

    Surface Pro 3 - August 2014.zip

    and

Surface Pro 3 WiFi BT v15_68_3044_85.zip

Extract each zip and go into EVERY folder and right click on EVERY .inf file and choose install.  Took several minutes.  Rebooted after installing all the .infs

It took about 5 minutes to complete the installation but now my SP3 charges and the minidp-to-VGA works on my second monitor.

Microsoft, this is totally unacceptable for a $2k machine.  I love everything else but if I didn't have a CS background, there's no way the normal user could do this.  Wasted hours on this so far.

I have been experiencing the same issues getting my external display to work properly using the Surface Dock and upon following these instructions, the mini-DV port on the Dock is now working properly! Thanks so much for providing this solution.

I should also note that I am still experiencing the "not charging" issue while docked after these updates.  It is intermittent -- occasionally, the dock will displaying that it is charging.

Thanks so much again for a resolution!

Same with me. I've been able to test the following configurations with the dock:

Mini displayport-to-displayport adapter to displayport cable - monitor receives no signal, Surface Pro 3 display flickers constantly and is unusable.

Mini displayport-to-DVI adapter to DVI cable- monitor receives no signal, Surface Pro 3 display remains on. Windows recognizes the monitor in the display properties. Monitor continues to receive no signal through any of the dual monitor configurations.

Mini displayport-to-VGA adapter to VGA cable - monitor receives signal properly. Monitor accepts up to 1920x1080 resolution.

All adapter and cable configurations work when plugged directly into the Surface mini displayport.

The monitor I use is a HP Compaq LA2405x, which has a maximum resolution of 1920x1200.

I'm having the same issue with the same monitor.

I tried yanking out the intel gfx drivers and reinstalling them.  Also tried forcing the newer HD 5000 (Iris) drivers from the intel download site, which caused the blue screen of sadness, causing me to reload the older drivers again.

My dock has always charged the tablet, I've never had that issue.

Something that's odd, is that whenever I try to plug the MDP cable into the dock and it does its insert/remove hardware sound over and over... when I take the cable out, my wireless (logitech+nano receiver in the usb2 port) goes nuts (like it's possessed) for about 30 seconds, and then it returns to normal.

I think there are two separate issues that need to be addressed.

A - Units that don't charge or display

B - Units that do charge the tablet but the MDP doesn't work.

From reading the other posts the people with issue A are either not up to date, or have driver issues that show up in device manager. For those people most of them seem to be able to correct the issue by installing updates or rolling back drivers.

For the people with issue B, like myself, there seems to be a different problem. I suspect some of these units have different chipsets in them, (or defective chipsets) and the drivers aren't compatible yet.

It's pretty pathetic that these units get out to the public with this many issues. I'm sitting here with about $1700 worth of hardware on my desk that doesn't work like it's supposed to. I'm a big fan of the Surface platform but there are WAY too many issues with the launch of SP3.
