Surface Pro 3 dock not detecting external monitor

I have a new surface pro 3 and I purchased two docking stations. 1 for the office and one for home. Neither docking stations allows the pro3 to detect a monitor that is plugged into it.   I can plug the monitor directly into the pro3 and it detects if fine both at home and at the office.   I can tell you that its a serious interruption professionally, and personally and does not bode well for MS's desires to serve the business community.   What I need is a solution.

hey guys

I had exact same issue and I did this and the issue magically solved!!

a two button restart:

  • Power off the Surface Pro
  • Hold Volume Up and the Power button for 10 seconds
  • Release buttons
  • Wait 5-10 seconds
  • Power on the Surface

Hi will-eman,

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Community! Sorry to know that your Docking Stations are not detecting your external displays. I can certainly understand why this is an inconvenience, especially when, as you mention, it is used in a business environment and for professional purposes. I’d like to help and hopefully provide the best possible solution!

Please try the following:

  • With the Surface and external display connected to the Docking Station, unplug the Docking Station from the power outlet, leave it unplugged for 30 seconds to a minute, then plug it back and see if the displays are recognized.
  • Please make sure all and latest Windows updates are installed. If so, verify all updates were taken while the Docking Station was connected to the Surface.
  • When you connect the external monitor, do you have any other devices connected to the Docking Station as well? And if so, have you tried removing all devices and connecting the external monitor only?
  • Have you tried connecting other external displays to the docking Station? Are ALL displays or devices not recognized?
  • Have you tried the what Ed Bott - MVP suggests?

Additionally, please read the following support article:

We hope this information works! Please keep us posted!

We are always here to help!

Best Wishes,

I have a Surface Pro 3 with a corresponding docking station. The docking station is connected to a Dell U2711 monitor using a simple passive 3ft mDP - DP cable from Monoprice.

After upgrading to Windows 10 and installing the latest Microsoft firmware & drivers (SurfacePro3_Win10_150723_0) I had this setup working with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 on the external monitor for a week.

The external monitor then stopped working after undocking and redocking while the Surface was turned on. Connecting it straight to the mDP on the Surface Pro 3 worked just fine, but not through the docking station. For 2 hours I tried everything suggested in this forum and everything else I could think of to fix it, including removing and reinstalling firmware and drivers. Turning devices off and on in all possible permutations. Unplugging and testing different cables and monitors (mDP to VGA and mDP to HDMI). Restoring to a known-good previous restore point. Dancing the lambada. Nothing worked. The monitor would not show up in the Device Manager or anywhere else.

Finally, this fixed it for me: undock the Surface and turn it off. Press the power button + volume up button for 15 seconds to completely power it down. Turn the Surface back on. Redock it. And voila, the external monitor through the docking station mDP is back.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I hope this helps anyone. BTW, I did notice the Surface is now finicky rebooting while docked; it frequently hangs on the start logo.

I also have an SP3 with a docking station.  I have 2 external monitors connected.

Prior to the official Win10 release (I was using a preview version), I was able to use both external monitors successfully.

After upgrading to the official version of Win10, I can only get 1 external monitor to work at a time!  I can get monitor #1 to work if I unplug #2 from the "hub", or #2 will work if I unplug #1.  I can't be both to work simultaneously.

    Incredibly frustrating!

After updating SP3 to Windows 10 I started to have this issue (WP8/8.1 - no issues). Monitor not switching on, if connected to Dock.

Rebooting the device helps, until SP3 went to sleep or removed-placed back on the dock station.

However, in the device manager monitor is detected, when the video cable is plugged. Re-plugging the cable does not solve the issue.

mDP port on the SP3 itself works fine, but this is not convenient in the business environment and frequent plugs not really healthy to the port itself...

    Please advise.

    Cheers,

    Alex.
