Random ERR_NETWORK_IO_SUSPENDED in Windows applications (network itself *is* working)

Quite often Windows applications are stuck (frozen) with error ERR_NETWORK_IO_SUSPENDED.

(Typically observed in Chrome, but impacts also any other application, e.g. Edge)

When:

  • after returning from sleep mode
  • *but also* at random time

For how long:

  • several minutes
  • then the applications automagically resume to normal behaviour

What is impacted:

  • all Windows applications at the same time
  • except WSL, that is *not* affected (e.g. I can do a curl without any problem)

Network itself is not the cause!:

  • other devices in my LAN still have access to Internet during the incidents
  • WSL still has access to Internet too!

I had the impression I could have solved the issue after forcing a downgrade/upgrade of Windows, but the problem is there again (maybe since the last Windows update). Windows version is up to date. Already tried to reboot many times, of course. To no avail.

This issue is extremely frustrating, when you are are stuck in the middle of a sentence and have to look at your laptop during long minutes before being able to finish typing. (BTW, got stuck twice while typing the present question!)

I'm quite desparate with this. Don't even have a clue on how to investigate. Did not find anything interesting in Event Viewer.

    Not much to add other than that I am having this issue as well with my ASUS laptop. Having pretty much all the same issues people have said already; Chrome giving me the ERR_NETWORK_IO_SUSPENDED error after waking up from sleep and often several random times after that, other apps like Discord and Microsoft Teams just acting as if there were no internet connection at all, search and windows buttons in the taskbar not opening up correctly, and no issues detected through any of the normal diagnostic tests. I am also using Windows 11, I really wish someone would respond to help with a solution that isn't just the normal procedure :/ It's been easy enough to ignore and live with so far, but it's extremely annoying and it has been popping up more and more frequently and is affecting plans at this point (like important calls through Discord or Teams).

    Same here, a few months ago this started to happen.

    In my case it is a Surface Pro 4 with W10.

    It seems there are lots of us out there with basically the same issue or a variation of it.

    Does anyone at all that has no chrome installed still suffer from same issue?

    If yes please pass that info.

    Just to remind everyone in this post.

    This issue isn't a Surface issue. It exists in lots of PCs and laptops from different brands including self-built computers.

    And please can the people who advise that one updates the PC just stop that?

    We all work on PCs and get that updates are important. All pf us have our machines updated naturally.

    We have an issue at hand that probably requires someone who knows much about the backbone of Windows and software in general to pitch in.

    I have the same problem with a Dell Precision 5540:

    After PC went to sleep and logging in again:

    • Brave browser:
      • ERR_NETWORK_IO_SUSPENDED error when trying to load/reload a site
      • Scrolling/selecting text in a previously loaded page doesn't work
      • Switching tabs is usually still possible
    • Windows:
      • Pressing the Win button on the keyboard or trying to open the start menu with the mouse doesn't work
      • Teams/Outlook report that they are offline
      • Sluggish behavior of whole system

    After a few minutes, the above problems go away and I can work normally again. But sometimes (after everything has been working fine for a while) it's also happening that all of a sudden everything mentioned above happens again (without the PC going to sleep or being locked meanwhile).
