Random ERR_NETWORK_IO_SUSPENDED in Windows applications (network itself *is* working)

Quite often Windows applications are stuck (frozen) with error ERR_NETWORK_IO_SUSPENDED.

(Typically observed in Chrome, but impacts also any other application, e.g. Edge)

When:

  • after returning from sleep mode
  • *but also* at random time

For how long:

  • several minutes
  • then the applications automagically resume to normal behaviour

What is impacted:

  • all Windows applications at the same time
  • except WSL, that is *not* affected (e.g. I can do a curl without any problem)

Network itself is not the cause!:

  • other devices in my LAN still have access to Internet during the incidents
  • WSL still has access to Internet too!

I had the impression I could have solved the issue after forcing a downgrade/upgrade of Windows, but the problem is there again (maybe since the last Windows update). Windows version is up to date. Already tried to reboot many times, of course. To no avail.

This issue is extremely frustrating, when you are are stuck in the middle of a sentence and have to look at your laptop during long minutes before being able to finish typing. (BTW, got stuck twice while typing the present question!)

I'm quite desparate with this. Don't even have a clue on how to investigate. Did not find anything interesting in Event Viewer.

    I had the same exact issue on my Dell XPS 13. Sometime in the last 3-4 months I started seeing this issue and it had gotten worse in the last month. More recently it would happen multiple times after coming back from sleep and it was infuriating.

    This afternoon I bit the bullet (it wasn't that bad since most of my data is synced with OneDrive) and did a full clean install of Windows 11 from a USB and didn't restore any of my previous settings. I just got done installing all of the drivers and basic Dell Update software. So far, the issue hasn't recurred but I'll keep you all posted if it does.

    So you basically join this chat to brag about Your expensive Mac and not provide any ideas or suggestions, bravo good for you.

    On the other hand for the ones looking for workournds about this, if you are on a laptop Go to power settings > Change what closing the lid does ... then when plugged in set to do nothing, while your laptop is at home connected to the power cord it won't sleep so the network iusse will no trigger. This is a Temporary solution if you are on the move I'd suggest to just turn it off or set the settings for hibernation, in my case hibernation does not cause any network problems

    Not that it makes much difference but I've confirmed that this problem also happens when using an eGPU.

    Hi Marrion,

    All the solutions you gave above are just standard Windows troubleshooting repairs that don't solve the issue at hand.

    I would assume that you give some credit to some of the people out there that they have already exhausted the Windows 'repair' steps before referring to the online community.

    Microsoft has to acknowledge there is an issue that lots of PC users are having. It's bot being addressed.

    But what's new here? Come on, it's Windows! PC users spend have their time on their computers fixing the system and the other half using it.

    I've been using Windows sine 2000. I also build PCs before. I tell you, I spend lots of times repairing software/hardware issues than use Windows itself, until...

    I got saved by Apple iMac! After that I just spend my time using my computer.

    The point is: MS has to find a solution to this issue.
