Surface 8 Pro - new SSD - compatibility with PCIe 4

Hello,

is the Surface 8 Pro compatible with PCIe 4 drives or can I only use PCIe 3 ssd?

If not all drives are compatible, which drives work?

    I have the same problem. There is an SSD WD SN740 2TB. When installing Windows 11, I get constant reboots. Changing the power saving modes described above - does not help.

    Checked all updates now.

    New firmware for SP 8 has not been released since January 2022.

    I tried to install the latest version of Windows 11 on December 07, 2022, the result is the same - reboot during installation.

    This worked perfectly foR me. I had to do it again after installing the 22H2 Update for Windows11. I could do in the regeditor in windows however (SN740 is unstable bur runs for 1 - 5 min).

    I'applied the boot /regedit method with sn 740 1tb. Even though i coudnt apply all seetings it worked. As mentioned i had to do it again after installing 22H2 Update. But you can do it after start up in the regeditor (U need to be quick as the system will initially run but crash after 1-5 min.) then reboot and it works perfectly. Read Write was 5000/4100 MB/s with CrystallDiskMark

    Finally I sold my SN740 and installed again the original 256 drive that is a hynix bc711. So I ordered from ebay a relatively cheap bc711 512gb, to improve a littel the capacity untill to understand how to do with a gen 4x4 compatibility.

    Anyway, at the end I think that the power plans myst remain the original for a surface... much much better and balanced for the battery, even if you use the laptop for extreme power tasks with Throttlestop.

    So what fixed it for the SN740 2TB for me was to install the new Surface SAM Firmware. See below:

    • Surface model: Surface Pro 8 Model 1983 i7
    • SAM: 11.101.139.0
    • UEFI: 18.102.141.0
    • WiFi driver: 22.190.0.4
    • App Version: 61.11095.139.0

    You can install that by turning on the Windows Insider Program and choosing the release preview track.

    It isn't perfect. Sleep sometimes crashes - but no crashes at all during work.
