Surface 8 Pro - new SSD - compatibility with PCIe 4

Hello,

is the Surface 8 Pro compatible with PCIe 4 drives or can I only use PCIe 3 ssd?

If not all drives are compatible, which drives work?

    Finally, my problem seems disappeared, at least for 7 hours today.

    Inspired by lalaneta. What I did was:

    1. Enable "Link State Power Management" option in Power Options.

    1. Choose "Off" for "Link State Power Management".
    2. Reboot.

    After the problem was gone, I did a test on SN740: seq read > 5000MB/s, seq write > 4000MB/s. Also, information from WD dashboard app said the interface connection is "Gen4 (4 Lanes)". Nice.

    The latest firmware from Windows Insider Program doesn't help in my case (WD SN740 1TB). Will try editing the registry.

    Lalaneta,

    I used your post as a guide to make the appropriate changes in the registry using REGEDIT (from the search bar) with my original drive still installed. I then cloned my old drive using Macrium onto the new SN740 2TB drive. I had the new drive mounted in an enclosure that connects via USBC. Once the clone was complete, I placed the new SSD into the bay and everything works great. Very fast reads and writes, about 1.9TB of storage and a stable operating system. Fantastic!

    So what fixed it for the SN740 2TB for me was to install the new Surface SAM Firmware. See below:

    • Surface model: Surface Pro 8 Model 1983 i7
    • SAM: 11.101.139.0
    • UEFI: 18.102.141.0
    • WiFi driver: 22.190.0.4
    • App Version: 61.11095.139.0

    You can install that by turning on the Windows Insider Program and choosing the release preview track.

    It isn't perfect. Sleep sometimes crashes - but no crashes at all during work.
