Surface Pro 8 camera issues; have to constantly disable and re-enable camera driver to get it to work

I've had an on-going issue with my surface pro 8 since I first got it about 20 months ago. The camera will stop working, light will stay on. This happens quite frequently, up to a few times per hour sporadically while using the camera. I've only really been bothered by this more recently as I've been using the camera more for work.

Both front and rear-facing cameras will cease working when this happens.

Disabling and re-enabling the camera driver solves the problem temporarily, making me think it's a driver issue. I've previously attempted to uninstall and install the latest drivers to no effect.

Thank you for your time in this matter.

Thank you for reporting the issue. A fix is available through Windows Update.  For more information about updates for your Surface available through Windows Update see the Surface Pro 8 update history page.

    Hi SP8 Camera problems,

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your Surface Pro 8 camera. Based on the information you've provided; it does sound like a driver issue. Let’s work together in finding the best solution to this issue.

Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

    1. Run the automated camera troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Get Help automatically runs diagnostics and takes the correct steps to fix most camera issues. Open Get Help and select Camera from the list of options. Then, select Run the troubleshooter
    2. Check for Windows updates: Make sure your Surface Pro 8 is up to date with the latest Windows updates. Sometimes, updates can include fixes for known issues.
    3. Reset the camera app: Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Camera > Advanced options > Reset. This will reset the camera app to its default settings.
    4. Make sure that Camera access and Let apps access your camera are set to On. To do this, select Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
    5. Go to Device Manager, locate the camera driver, right-click on it, and select "Update driver." You can also try downloading the latest driver from the Microsoft website.
    6. Next, download and install the driver pack on your Surface Pro8. to update the hardware of the device.
    7. Once the installation is complete, restart the Surface to apply changes and then test the camera once the device is back on.

I hope this helps resolve your issue. Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    Kind regards,

    Christopher.

Same issue since I got this device last year. The driver appears to be buggy. To make things worse, not only does the light stay on and the camera does not respond, leaving it in this state eventually leads to a BSOD. It seems to be caused by Windows Hello activating the camera when returning from sleep. A fix would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi ExcitingCameraProblems

Thank you for following all the steps we’ve sent you so far. We appreciate your efforts, but the issue still persists. To ensure that the issue is not caused by software, we recommend downloading and running the USB recovery image on your Surface device. This will perform a fresh installation of Windows specific to your Surface device and clear out any issues on the device.

To Download USB Recovery Image - http://aka.ms/sri

    REQUIREMENTS:

To ensure compatibility with your Surface device, it is recommended to use a USB flash drive with a minimum storage capacity of 16 GB to 32 GB and format it to FAT32. If the storage capacity exceeds 32 GB, it is not possible to format it to FAT32 as only XFAT and NTFS options are available. Please note that if a USB flash drive is formatted to XFAT or NTFS, it will not be detected on your Surface device.

NOTE: Creating a recovery drive will erase all existing files that are stored on the SSD drive. Make sure to transfer any important data on your USB flash drive to another storage device before you proceed.

Once the download is complete, create a folder on your desktop and rename it to ‘recovery’. Extract the recovery image to the folder you created on your desktop. After the extraction is complete, select all the files in the folder and copy and paste them directly to your USB flash drive. Do not copy the folder directly to the USB. Once the copying is done, remove the USB and connect it to your Surface.

When you are ready, please click this link Creating and using a USB recovery drive for Surface - Microsoft Support to follow the step on how to use the recovery image.

    Thank you for your understanding.

    Christopher
