Surface Dock USB ports not working - Dock Updater repeatedly fails

I have Surface book 13.5, and Surface Dock. USB ports on the dock are not working.

Running Surface Dock updater says I need to power cycle the dock, although I already did it several times.

Event viewer reports error code 12105, with message: "Failed to update USB hub firmware."

Thanks Barb, running the dock updater with the dock connected directly to the clipboard (no keyboard attached) made no difference at all - still the same error message and instruction to power cycle the dock.

Here's the copied data form the Surface app you requested:

    Name: ------

    Serial number: -----

    SKU: Surface Book i5

    Version Information

    Embedded controller: 90.2098.256.0

    UEFI: 91.1926.768.0

    Touch: 51.250.94.0

    Wi-Fi driver: 15.68.9112.23

I have the same problem.  Has anyone found a fix?  I have two Surface books and a dock and the issue persists regardless of what surfacebook I use or what is connected to the dock.  It doesn't sound like a hardware issue since people are having the issue with docks they get when they return their "broken" ones.  This seems to be software related.  Can anyone assist?

received suggestion that you should try to run the dock updater from the

clipboard only with the base detached.

    if that does not work

    1.    Click Start

    2.    Type in Surface

    3.    Open Surface App

    4.    Choose computer icon

    5.    Choose copy

    6.    Paste the info into post but make sure to strip out Name and Serial#

Hi Barb, Thank you for the suggestion. Still did not work. I am still circumventing the problem using an active USB hub connected to the dock. While this works, it is still annoying and i fear that I would break another dock when connecting to it (2 already so far).

I got my new dock - and I had the same problem. I took all the parts and swapped them round with someone's set up and here's what happened.

My power cords work with my usual Surface Pro power supply unit

My Surface Pro charges on the other power cord/power supply/dock

My new dock works (well charges the Surface Pro) when I use the other power cord/power supply/dock

Therefore it seems the failed unit is the power supply that came with my first dock. When I got the new dock it did not come with a new power supply unit.

Can Microsoft replace this? If it turns out both the old and new docks work I will gladly return the new dock.
