Hi, I'm experiencing a frustrating issue related to MMS. I have the unlocked Surface Duo on Red Pocket (MVNO using AT&T). Everything is working great except to send / receive MMS messages. When I setup the APN and save it, it won't retain the default,mms,supl under APN Type. I've restarted, reset the network, and factory reset.

Red Pocket says its on the phone's end, which I'm certain is true, but I cannot figure out why I'm having the issue. Any help? :)

When you attempted to set the APN settings on your Duo did you follow these steps:

Open the Settings app

Tap Network & internet

Tap Mobile network

Tap Access Point Names

Tap + to add a new APN settings

Add the setting per Setting up your Red Pocket Mobile device – Red Pocket Mobile

Tap the three vertical dots and then tap Save

You will now be back at the APNs screen, tap the circle next to the APN you just created.

Tap Red Pocket Mobile to verify if this is where you are seeing the settings (APN type, APN protocol) change? Are there any other settings that are not saved?

Upon looking at the APN settings, as you can see on the right below, there are two more fields at the bottom below Bearer: MVNO Type and MVNO Value. Which options should be used?

Here are the options for each of those settings in case you're wondering.

MVNO TYPE

Please select from the following options listed below:

None
SPN (Service Provider Name)
IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity)
GID (Group Identifier)

MVNO VALUE

This is a text entry field, and it depends on the setting you put in MVNO Type.

SPN: Enter the name of your service provider, not your MVNO provider (in this case, AT&T, because it has the MCC and MNC at 310 and 410, respectively).
IMSI: We don't know what this is, but it starts with 310410x...
GID: No clue here...

Oh interesting! Do you happen to know what else they changed? I had spoken with them twice before switching to the Verizon Messages+ app and they had checked I was on CMDA-less, and enabled Enhanced Messaging and Integrated Messaging. With the latter application I also noticed pictures coming in clearer from iPhone users and so on.

I had the same problem with my Duo, I called Verizon support and they found an article in their documentation for an extra provisioning step needed to make it work, They performed the step, and it worked. I bought my surface on Jan 21

I've also been having lots of trouble with Group MMS in particular showing Message Expired etc. After some chats with Verizon and searching online, I think it is Google Messages fault... lots of users with a variety of Android phones reported success with third part messaging apps. As I'm on Verizon, I tried their app before some of the other popular solutions. It is kind of ugly but I believe I witnessed an oddity that would've resulted in an error and lost message in Google Messages result in a slight delay in a MMS message, so while I'm not too far into the troubleshooting I think it is the Google Messages app at fault.
